Santorum's youngest daughter was admitted to Childrens' Hospital of Philadelphia. Santorum has cancelled his events. Sadly, due to her condition, the worst is probably to be expected.

What is her condition?  How old is she?

I forget the condition, but the prognosis doesn't usually allow for surviving infancy and she's three or four years old.

My prayers and best wishes to the Santorum family.

She has Edwards syndrome. The fact that she's lived this long is phenomenal.

Despite my strong disagreement with the man's politics, it is always a great tragedy when things like this happen.  My best wishes to the Santorums.

It's basically Edwards Syndrome - it's VERY VERY rare to make it beyond infancy with it.

Obviously, until we hear more, it's probably not best to make arm-chair diagnoses... but obviously my thoughts are with the Santorum family. I know what it's like to have a severely disabled child in the family and these times are incredibly difficult.

What a true shame, though it is unlikely I hope it turns out for the better.

If it doesn't sound too trollish, can I say I wish her condition had a different name.  "Edwards" syndrome ain't exactly an felicitous name for something that afflicts the relative of a Presidential candidate.

My God.  My heart is with them if this indeed is a mortal disease.  It is one thing when an elderly person passes away (it's their time, after all), but for a child....

Ditto.  It is truly sad.

The median lifespan for a child with Edward's is 5-15 days.

Very sad to hear this. Best wishes to the Santorums. The girl is inspiring for living this long with the disease. Bless her.

Something in my system doesn't like praying for people whose problems I only hear about through the media, but I feel like I shoudl be leading a more faith-filled life, so yes, she is in my prayers.

Very sad news. I hope she pulls through, but then as others have pointed out, Edward's Syndrome is an awful condition and it's incredible that she's lived this long as is. My thoughts are with the Santorums.

With very best wishes to the Santorum family.  Thanks for posting that video, r.i.  It's quite touching to see the great love that the family has shown to this little girl.

It's basically Edwards Syndrome - it's VERY VERY rare to make it beyond infancy with it.

15% chance to make it to your fourth birthday once you're born alive (as a majority won't be). Prognosis obviously depends on just how heavily disabled you are, as that is quite variable.

Prenatal diagnosis of Edwards syndrome is possible but pretty difficult, and thus usually does not happen, Milhouse. (Not feeling like doing the kind of research necessary to find out the specifics of Bella Santorum, sorry.)
