I'd like to formally ask the convention for an up-or-down vote on endorsing the Washburnist ticket for the Presidency.

Should this need any kind of second, I give it.

It doesn't, since I'm the Chairman and I'm making party rules mainly by setting precedent.

Ah. Wink

Shall we begin, then?

I don't think an up-or-down vote for one candidate in a race of four candidates is appropriate, we need all the candidates on the endorsement ballot.  We should also give the others an opportunity to address this convention.

I agree that we should listen to all the platforms.  I'm PMing Polnut and 20RP12 now.

Hello distinguished members of the Labor Party,

Today I declared my bid for President of Atlasia. My record proves to be that of a bi-partisan, active leader who puts The People before politics. Even though we may disagree on some issues, I believe the most important thing we can agree on is that we all love Atlasia. We want to see this country improve. I pledge to be a bi-partisan and active legislator, as I have been my entire career. I think, despite our ideological differences, we can unite. I'm 20RP12 and I'm running for President of Atlasia, not for one ideology.

I want to thank you for privilege of speaking with you today.

I am asking for your support to continue the reforms to help make Atlasia strong again. When I sought the Presidency last June, I promised a pragmatic but progressive agenda. I was elected with a mandate and I believe governed with the best interests of all at heart. Sometimes that left me with conflicts, but in the end I believe those conflicts help in bringing about effective compromises.

If I am fortunate to receive either your endorsement or a high preference I can promise you both a President and Vice President who know how actually get things done. It's wonderful to have the ideals, but in order to have real impact, they need to become tangible.

I know many of you are thinking 'Liberal' = moderate hero. Well let me make it very clear, I want to create a better economic environment for jobs to be created, but not just any jobs, jobs with benefits that make people feel secure. I believe the union movement in the single most important development in maintaining the middle-class and protecting the working poor. I will never, ever allow union-rights to be undermined.

I will also stand against attempts to privatise our education system. Education is a right, and the quality you receive should not depend on who your parents are, or how much they earn.

Over the next few weeks I will make more specific policy statements, but I ask you to look at my record as president. If you want a strong economy where workers rights are paramount, an education system that is strong as available to all and a place where the separation of church and state is gospel, and if you want to be served by an administration that works for you with a history of getting results, I ask for your support.

I would ask the Chairman to word the vote something like this:

I don't think that we should field a presidential ticket just yet, as we are still attempting to establish our party. With that in mind, I think we should first preference EarlAW and second preference Polnut in the upcoming presidential election, as they are the candidates with views closest to our own.

Is presidential election IRV/2 round or first past the post? If it's IRV we should field our own candidate.
Btw since we are most likely going to endorse the Socialists, I thought I should add their platform here.

No need to motion that, I can do it right now. It's not really a platform, just some crudely jotted "core beliefs". However, they shall henceforth be known as the Washburnist Manifesto,

I bolded the parts that may seem undemocratic to various members of our party. And the whole labor thing.

We are very committed to democracy. But, I will address the bolded parts.

Trade: Well, I don't believe we should be doing trade with dictatorships or with nations that while democratic, are run by corporatists.

Foreign intervention: It will not be a commitment of a Washburn presidency to start invading countries. We will however support insurgent movements in nations, to oppose dictatorships. The recent Arab spring uprisings would have all received help from a Washburn administration.

Education: This has been covered already in this thread.

State run broadcaster: This will be completely democratic. The state run broadcaster will not spew government propaganda, but rather be a forum of ideas, from both the left and the right. It will exist to provide neutrality, and biaslessness to compete with corporatist media. The corporatist media cannot be trusted, because they are beholden to their corporate overloads.

Death penalty: No Atlasian will be convicted of the death penalty, however will not oppose other nations using the death penalty against former dictators.

Police having guns: Police will be discouraged to use guns, but they will need them if a criminal has a gun. I don't see the problem with that.

Well in my opinion normal police shouldn't have guns, but they shouldn't be put into situations where their life would be in danger, guns should be only reserved for national guard/army.

I don't trust the police with guns. Imagine some of the strikes in Britain if the police had had firearms... ick.

Well, officers may need guns under certain circumstances. However, if elected I would be happy to look into what those circumstances might be. I do understand that much of our police force has a "macho" attitude that needs to be dealt with, certainly before we start handing out weapons to them. But anyways, the primary mandate I would have in terms of gun control is ensuring we get guns off the street (first and foremost), and then work from there.

Agreed. (Sorry I haven't been here the past twenty-four hours; social dilemmas called.)

Most of the Washburnist manifesto, with the exception of the education concerns already noted, is very acceptable to me, at least.

I think we should begin voting on this, then, since we have heard from all of the candidates (thank you, everybody, by the way!)

Ballot

Should the Labor Party field its own ticket for this Presidential election?
[ ] Yes
[ ] No

If the party does not field a ticket, which other candidate should it endorse?
[ ] 20RP12
[ ] EarlAW
[ ] Polnut
[ ] ZuWo
[ ] No endorsement

Second vote is by IRV.

I know it's strange to not want to run our own candidate, but I believe that we should concentrate on building up out party and winning regional and Senate election (that way we aren't top-heavy Wink). Also, a united left is always good. Wink

Once we finish the voting, I suggest we define and elect party leadership; then we can form our platform. Smiley

Hi guys,

I just want to let you all know I've decided not to run for re-election as Pacific Senator, and I encourage you all to run a candidate for Pacific Senator. Sbane is cool and it's not the end of the world if you don't, but please don't assume it will be a competitive election since I'm not running.

Also, run a candidate for President... Earl is kind of a dick, I can't vote for any ticket with a cat strangler on it, and the other two are right-wingers. NOTA is looking like the best option at the moment. Sad

I hope someone wants to run. It would be great if we elected our first senator(s... we might have a shot in Midwest too).
