(D)
President - Virginia Gov. Mark Warner
Vice President -  Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh

or

(R)
President - Colorado Gov. Bill Owens
Vice President - Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum

I DONT think this match up is TOOOO far fetched for 2008.  If things turn out as some see it this could be a possible setup for the 2008 Presidential race.

This is the best I could do for a potential map.  *See my last post w/ a map*

I'd suggest making Indiana and North Carolina toss-ups and switching Kentucky with Tennessee. Oh, and make South Dakota red. Wink

Otherwise good map.

Warner/Warner.

I agree with everything except the Indiana comment.  Bayh was a 2 term Governor and was just relected for a 2nd term to from that state.  He received 300,000 more votes than Bush in Indiana in the last election.  I believe he would deliver Indiana.

You really think SD would go for the Dem's?  If SD goes does ND?

Phillip (anyone from Virginia).  What do you think of Warner over all?  Could he carry Virginia?  Would you vote for him?

Yes, but it would be much closer if he was President, but he would still win solidly; if he was VP, it would be a toss-up. Few people vote on VP.

I did not say SD will go for the Democrats; but if it did, North Dakota would not. In any case, SD should still be red on that map.

EDIT: I wouldn't, err, ask Philip questions you want honest answers to. Wink

I'd vote for Owens. Not sure who would take it. Warner would have a slight edge, though.

Why would you give the slight edge to Warner?  Owens seems like he'd be a great candidate for the Republicans.  You think your boy Santorum would bring anything to the ticket?

Warner is a conservative Democrat. Owens is a conservative Republican.

In the case of a moderate vs. a conservative/liberal, the moderate usually wins.

Warner, unlike Edwards, could put VA in play. Bayh being the VP nominee would make IN interesting. Warner could win WV, too.

I do think Santorum would bring something to the ticket - Pennsylvania.

First off, welcome to the forum nickshepDEM.
I live in Virginia, so I'll do my best to answer the question.

Mark Warner has really tried to govern as a Southern Democrat and would be considered a moderate as far as the Democratic party is concerned on a national stage. The only thing he's done that I haven't liked is raised taxes, and he needed the Republican legislature to accomplish that.

Could Warner win Virginia? That's a tough question. Some say Warner only won the 2001 gubernatorial election because of the dissatisfaction with the previous Republican administration; he only won by about 5 or 6 percent I think (I didn't live in VA in 2001, so I could be wrong about that). That said, he'd put the state in play, no doubt, and would have a decent chance to win. I'd rate the state as a tossup.

Would I vote for Warner? In this scenario, I'd probably still vote for Owens. However, I would take a hard look at Warner, which is more than I could say for Kerry.

Thanx for the welcome and the analysis.

Its good to see that at least some people in this country vote for the candidate rather than the party.  I am the same way and Im sure most here are.  But I am so tired of this movement of people claming they will never vote Republican or they will never vote Democrat.... /end of rant.

Ive heard the same from some regarding his win in 2002 but, I have also heard he won because he did a great job of keeping the NRA neutral in the 2002 race.  I guess it depends on who you ask (dem or rep).

Changed the map a little according to Alcon.  This would be a hell of a race!  Unlike this last election neither candidate would be able to write of half the country.

I disagree.  Bayh isnt as conservative as most think.  He is DLC but, defintley not conservative if you ask me.  He is as liberal as you can be in Indiana without fear of being kicked out of office (LOL). Here is a summary of his voting record.

Voting Record:
# Voted NO on prioritizing national debt reduction below tax cuts. (Apr 2000)
# Balance debt reduction, tax relief, & policy investment. (Jan 2001)
# Voted YES on adding sexual orientation to definition of hate crimes. (Jun 2002)
# Rated 91% by the NEA, indicating pro-public education votes. (Dec 2003)
# Firmly opposed to Bush’s voucher proposal.
# Voted YES on targeting 100,000 hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2010.
# Voted YES on removing consideration of drilling ANWR from budget bill.
# Voted NO on drilling ANWR on national security grounds.
# Voted NO on defunding renewable and solar energy.
# Voted NO on cap foreign aid at only $12.7 billion.
# Voted YES on banning campaign donations from unions and corporations.
# Prevent unauthorized firearm use with "smart gun" technology.
# Rated 75% by APHA, indicating a pro-public health record.
# Voted NO on using the Social Security Surplus to fund tax reductions.
# Voted NO on $350 billion in tax breaks over 11 years. (May 2003)
# Voted NO on cutting taxes by $1.35 trillion over 11 years. (May 2001)
# Voted NO on $792B tax cuts.

Statements during 2004 campaign season regarding war in Iraq:
# Iraq-al-Qaida contacts, but no complicity or assistance. (Jul 2004)
# CIA knew State of the Union Iraq-Niger connection was false. (Jul 2004)
# Iraq was not reconstituting its nuclear program. (Jul 2004)
# Iraq was not developing its biological weapons program. (Jul 2004)
# Iraq was not developing its chemical weapons program. (Jul 2004)

Liberals are willing to vote for people a lot more conservative than them.
