In the citizneship exam, they ask a series of personal questions:

Have you ever been a terrorist? A prostitute? A drug dealer? A communist? A Nazi?

Obviously, a ''yes'' answer raises a red flag.

Another such question is ''Have you ever advocated the overthrow of any government by force or violence?''

I have to assume ''no'' is the expected answer.

Though I wonder what might happen if you said, ''Yes, but only in Nicaragua, Chile, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan.''

Just finished this citizenship test here:

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2011/0104/Could-you-pass-a-US-citizenship-test/Who-signs-bills

Got 85 out of 96 questions right.

The questions that I didn't get right:

How many amendments does the Constitution have?
When was the Declaration of Independence adopted?
What does the Constitution do?
When is the last day you can send in federal income tax forms?
What happened at the Constitutional Convention?
Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?
The Federalist Papers supported the passage of the U.S. Constitution. Name one of the writers.
What did the Emancipation Proclamation do?
When was the Constitution written?
What are two rights in the Declaration of Independence?
What is one thing Benjamin Franklin is famous for?

Actually, in the exam you only need to answer 6 of 10 questions correctly. The interviewer just chooses 10 at random. The bulk of the interview is taken up by personal questions, which can last for about 20 minutes.

I like how to become a citizen you need to know a ton of things that at least 80% of citizens-by-birth wouldn't know.

92 right, I cringed when I saw which ones I didn't know, but I don't think which river is the longest is of much important to US citizenry.

93 out of 96.  I misread one answer.

Why does the flag have 13 stripes?

When was the Constitution written?

What is one responsibility that is only for United States citizens?

I botched the name of the national athem (Oops) and number of amendments to the Constitution.

Overall the test was pretty easy and repetative.  This should be a test for sanity.  If you are an American and have lived in the US all your life you should pass this with flying colors.

I am the Atlas champ so far.  I want to see someone get a perfect score.

Probably not on the real exam.  It's probably a question from old test books.

Got a perfect score up to the question about which economic system the US has, which I of course refused to answer since the "correct" one isn't "correct."

That question is designed to weed out Tea Party lunatics... we have too many already.

Yeah, if we made the average high-schooler take something like this, the results would assuredly be embarrassing. Quite pathetic.

I want to see someone get a perfect score.

I did. Tongue Though you'll have to take my word on it; I didn't think to document it, partly because I was pissed off by how cumbersome it was to trudge through it. They really couldn't just fit all the questions on a page or two?

No, it's the real exam.

They not only ask if you're a Communist, but even if you've been a Nazi during the '30s or '40s.

It's batty.

P.S. got 87/96 on the test.

95/96

Under our Constitution, some powers belong to the states. What is one power of the states?

make treaties

create an army - My answer

provide schooling and education - supposedly correct answer.

coin or print money

However, the states all have their own little militias and state guards and whatever, while there was no such thing as public schooling at the time the constitution was written.
Am I wrong or is the test wrong?

Really?  I didn't take the whole thing, but I clicked on Branson's link and answered the first four correctly before I got bored.  (They're delivered one at a time.)  They're pretty easy, if the first four are representative.  I'd imagine the average gringo would probably be able to answer six of ten randomly-chosen ones.

Okay, I'm up to 25 now.  So far I'm on a roll, but they are getting harder.  Gee, is Mr. Obama from the Republican Party, the Democratic Party, the Green Party, or the Independence Party?  Roll Eyes

Also, I agree that it seems a little over-the-top to refuse citizenship based solely on the fact that someone has been a prostitute.  Communist I can understand, even terrorist, but most people are capable of prostituting themselves, even Americans.

Ooh, here's a hard one:  "26. What is one promise you make when you become a United States citizen?"  I have no idea, honestly.  I think the only promise I made when I became a citizen was to cry until somebody changed my diaper, or put a titty in my mouth.  And I'm not gonna say which one it is, you just have to figure it out from the tone of my cry.  Ha!

Okay, that's odd.  I picked "give up loyalty to other country" by process of elimination, and it was correct.  But from what I hear, we're not like China.  We actually allow dual citizenship, so that question seems philosophically flawed.  I call foul!  I respectfully submit that this question is misleading, at best.  There may be others like that, but at this point I'm 26 for 26 and I'm bored with it.  I'd still bet that a randomly-picked native Yankee would get at least six of ten.

Communist party members are still proscribed from obtaining U.S. visas, not to mention from citizenship.

If only there were some way for a Communist to answer the question "Are you a Communist?" without alerting any suspicions.  Any way at all.  But of course, these lines of interrogation are just too water-tight.
