http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy_McMorris_Rodgers

She's worth looking into. She has a great personal history. Her focus is on environmental and health issues related to the economy. She managers to balance conservative ratings (96% ACU) without looking like a very right winger (61% Heritage Rating). 4th highest ranking Republican, very successful in her position which makes her beyond acceptable by the establishment.

If Gingrich wins I think she could be a great choice for VP, though I haven't seen any interviews of debates she's been in yet. Romney she doesn't bring as much as he needs and the tea party may not find her acceptable as a moderate's VP to balance the ticket.

Are we really at that stage of the campaign already...?

And no, please no more dark horses. At least not this soon, considering the last disaster...

Vice Chair of House Republican Leadership Conference, number four after Boehner, Cantor, and Pence...is not a dark horse.

I barely even remembered her name, and 99% of the country doesn't know it either... that's a dark horse.

Sarah Palin was in one of the least populated, most isolated states in the country and did nothing nationally. This woman coordinates the republican house and position like that doesn't go to someone who can't do the job. It doesn't matter that the country doesn't know her, this isn't the same thing as the country not knowing Sarah Palin at all.

You know that, but 98% of Americans don't.

I consider a dark-horse anyone who has less than 10% name recognition.

She can't be compared to Sarah Palin because of the name recognition factor. That is completely apples and oranges of differences.

Alex, if Romney picks her, 98% of Americans, and I'm not exaggerating, will be shocked. 97% of them will say "Who on Earth is that?"

That's my definition of a dark horse. Doesn't matter too much whether or not they have connections in D.C.

The Sarah debacle in 2008 pretty much guarantees that there will not be a female running-mate this year unless something happens to Joe and Barack names Hillary as the replacement running mate.

I'd say it guarantees that the running mate won't be an politician with 1 1/2 years' experience who has never been on the national stage. Which is a problem, considering all his top choices were just elected in 2009 (boring establishment choice McDonnell) or 2010 (Hispanic pandering choices Rubio, Sandoval, and Martinez).

I'd say it guarantees both. The main reason a woman can't be selected is rightfully or wrongfully the ticket would then have to spend about a week of media time explaining why she is not another Sarah Palin.

Yes for both, although likely better suited for Gingrich.

Gingrich maybe. I think he would have no choice but to pick a woman for his running mate.

Probably not for Romney.

If I were Romney, I would need to pick a TEA Party favorite, not a member of the Republican leadership.

These guys would be on my shortlist:

Marco Rubio
Allen West
Michele Bachmann
Rand Paul
Jim DeMint
Rick Perry (Hey, it's possible)
Bobby Mondale (not quite TEA Party, but close enough)
