Considering they don't show up for the seats they're elected to, epic Freedom Party.  Every party should be like that. Smiley

Mixed. I wouldn't vote for them but they've turned in a pretty decent performance electorally and are probably owed some respect at this point.

For the benefit of sentimental right-wing Americans with who are 1.38% Irish: government spending makes Sinn Féin all warm and fuzzy inside.

Only in the House of Commons, where there votes would rarely make a difference anyway. They now take up their seats in the Dáil, in local government (in both parts of the island) and (most significantly) at Stormont.

Yeah, worth noting that SF are the closest thing to a communist party that we have in our union.

What do UK Sinn Fein MPs do with their time? Do they receive the £65738 salary?

Not 100% sure about the salary (leaning towards saying they don't get it), but they do get expenses.

And they're all in the NI Assembly and technically Westminster MPs.

Meh, abstain.

I admit I'm far too ignorant of Irish political party history to make a for sure judgment about the SF.

I support Sinn Fein.  I used to be a little active in the diaspora side of things, but that was some years back now.  I'd like to see the youth take more leadership roles and I do think Adams and McG are passing the baton.

Well obviously I'd only be an SF supporter for the House of Commons (and maybe Northern Ireland Assembly too, since the other guys haven't yet reached agreement on whether I'm worthy of life, though I'd probably just stay home).

They and Paisley's DUP are guilty of violence and terrorism against their own people. Part of it is over religion too because Paisley's a protestant and Sinn Fein is heavily Catholic.

I don't like them or their erstwhile opponents. Violence was used far too long for a bad reason.

Why they don't give them a referendum like Scotland, I don't know.

Really the have?
Again, I admit ignorance about what political parties in NI are about.

I guess that makes me a bad Irish American, not automatically assuming that parties that are pro-republican are auto-FFs.  But, to me the great tragedy of the Troubles and other conflicts in Northern Ireland has been the news of Irish men killing their fellow men, women, and children, more so than whether or not it should remain part of the UK or not.

It should be the decision of the people of Northern Ireland, not of Great Britain, not the Irish Republic, or anybody else about whether or not they remain part of the UK or they join the rest of the island in the republic.  I agree, a popular referendum is the only real choice for these people.  It's not violence, it's not legislation, it's not treaties.  It's the decision of the people themselves that should count.

Neither side will ever accept a referendum, because neither side would ever accept the consequences if their side lost.
