This is the biggest hyporisy I find with Romney... Santorum won in 94, Romney lost- both in blue states.

Romney went up against Ted friggin' Kennedy in Massachusetts. Santorum beat an old, washed-up, Mondale-style liberal appointee

Teddy Kennedy was damaged goods at that point...early 90s he was in the papers every day for a new scandal

Still a Kennedy in Massachusetts. In other words, unbeatable. But Romney made Kennedy take out a mortgage on his house, and made a real run at him. Nobody could have done better.
