Started  wrinting the post before you wrote yours. Dunno why it didnt show up on the board.  As you can see, there are only a few minutes between.

But you can guess who gets my single vote Smiley

Marie François Sadi Carnot
Alexandre Millerand
Gaston Doumergue
Vincent Auriol
Nicolas Sarkozy

Hope Nappy Jr. makes it to the final - much too soon to eliminate him.

Valéry Giscard d'Estaing

Getting harder now. Guess Faure is the weakest of the remaining pre-1958 presidents. Loubet did after all made the entente with Britain, which was a smart move. But I will go with Giscard.

OK to avoid more coin flipping Ill go with Antonio this time and vote pompous Pompidou (then maybe we can get that blood diamond receiving arrogant, obnoxious aristocrat with the bad bad economic  policies next time Wink  )
Since it is now 3-2 in Pompous Pompy vs.The Obnoxious Aristocrat, Ill change my vote back to Giscard (sorry Antonio Smiley  )

Well...

- Its 3-2 for Pompous Pompy.
- The opposition is split between Thiers and Loubet.
- The only regular voter, who hasn't voted yet is Nhoj, who said Pompy last time.

So that's a fairly safe bet Wink

OK. I have saved Loubet before because of entente cordiale, and it seems he was a better president than Millerand and Thiers. Guess its just my anti-secularization tendencies that makes me dislike him. Ill go Millerand in this one (and Thiers in the next if you get Millie the Troll out).

Raymond Poincare is difficult to evaluate. Clemenceau overshadows him so much. But his radical approach to the German question might actually have worked seen from a selfish French perspective. I just hate the idea of an even more unfair Versailles treaty than IRL.

Adolphe Thiers.

Whats your opinion of Poincare? "Mons. Living in the shadow of the Tiger" (Clemenceau)

Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte

Because abolishing the republic and making yourself dictator does make you a bad prez!

Since we only have decent or great presidents left he has to go, even if he did make a few reforms and many of his opponents among the royalists where far worse than him.

Before Loubet, Poincaré, Mitterrand ?
Without me.
Improve your chances by providing an alternative candidate for elimination.
You didnt join Nhoj on Grevy, so I take it you agree he was better?

The trouble with Nappy Jr. is, that he abolished the constitution he was supposed to uphold.

Nappy was great. He produced referendums, electoral datas aplenty. He lost pathetically a big war. He presided over paradoxical evolutions in France.
Historically, he was so interesting. And electorally ! Ask Hashemite !
Sure he was great, but (most of) his greatness was as emperor, not president. And the imperial period doesn't count here.

Grevy, third republic presidents where not as interesting as fifth republic prez. De Gaulle and Mitterand dominated French politics much more than a guy like Grevy. Better a pure Fifth Republic Final.

Has to be Charles de Gaulle. The man who created the model for the modern French presidency. The quintessential French president.
