Perot didn't wanted to appoint a Gulf War opponent like himself to the SecDef post but the Republicans speculated of his advanced years hindering his performance in the hearings and offered Perot Mac or Powell.

A common negative public perception over the next four years will be of Perot as a GOP puppet.


Well, he was for Reagan in 80, 84, and ironically bush in 88.  There may have been some behind the scenes deals to force him into the running in 92, smoke-filled rooms, etc. IMHO.
