I'm now the longest-serving Cabinet member in Atlasian history - this is my 1,059th day in office as SoFE. I've been responsible for the administration of every federal election since December 2011.

It's a bit arrogant of me to be pointing this out when I've made so many mistakes and errors of judgment and have been in something of a stubborn, prickly mood of late, but I did want to thank all of you for the confidence you have shown in me and my office. I have often disappointed and on one or two occasions probably deserved to be dismissed, but I hope that my failures have demonstrated a tendency to be lazy and careless rather than venal and vindictive. I enjoy the job, and while I certainly can't imagine that I'll make it to 2,000 days as SoFE, I appreciate the opportunity to have served for so long. So, cheers and best wishes for the new year to all.

Okay, I have a question.

Does this mean the presidential election begins on Thursday (tomorrow) or Friday? Surely it can't be both.

In practice that language is intended to provide for a range of possible times during which a voting booth can be opened. The general custom, one that I've adhered to now for well over three years, is for the election to begin as close to 0:00 on Friday as possible (while still beginning on Thursday), so that the 72-hour election period encompasses as much of the weekend as possible.

Barring some last-minute changes, here's our candidate list for this weekend's election:

President/VP

Maxwell/Dallasfan (DR)
Bore/Bacon King (Labor-TPP)
JCL/Devin (Fed)

Northeast Senate

Talleyrand (Labor)
Matt from VT (TPP)
cinyc (ind.)

IDS Senate

Hagrid (ind.)
NC Yankee (Fed)

Mideast Senate

Windjammer (Labor)
Spiral (DR)

Midwest Senate

TNF (Labor)
Dereich (Fed)
Cassius (Fed)

Pacific Senate

Cranberry (TPP)

Here's a little chart summarizing final-round election results since the January 2012 dissolution, with the second-place candidate listed where applicable.

One issue: it was Cynic/Griff in October 2013, not Griff/Cynic (though I'm flattered).

Also, what about first round results? That'd make bore's victory look a lot better in comparison. Cheesy

bore's thing is from the first round results, otherwise it'd be 60-40 or whatever the margin was (I deleted my second round calculations about 115 votes in).

It would have been 71 Bore, 54 Maxwell with 2 exhausted. So 56.8-43.2.

What I meant was showing each election's first round results between (presumably) the top two vote-getters. Excluding the most recent one, I don't think we've had an election decided in the first round since June 2011.

You're welcome.

But more importantly... do we or do we not have a date for the special?

We do. (March 13-15)

So far we have four candidates qualified for ballot access:

JCL (Federalist)
Foucaulf (TPP)
Adam Griffin (Labor)
Poirot (Independent)

Kalwejt won't be on the ballot, but he has accepted write-in votes.

I'll be posting the voting booth thread for this weekend's special election momentarily. The booth does not open until 12:00 EST, Atlas default time (1:00 EDT), so take note: if you cast your vote before 12:00 EST, Atlas default time (1:00 EDT), it will not be counted.

In other words, there's no need to try to be the first person to cast your ballot. You have 72 hours in which to vote.

The cruel destruction of two of our beloved friends and colleagues thrusts upon our consciences the urgent need to celebrate their lives while we can still vividly remember who they were and what they did. In doing so, we must offer solace to those for whom their loss is felt acutely, but we must not mourn, for Michael Denvir and Andrea Roccanello were not innocents. Their deaths were not unthinkable or incomprehensible. They were partisans of democracy, committed to ideals which marked them as enemies and targets. Though they may not have expected to part from us in that time and in that place, they were prepared to make this sacrifice so that the right of Atlasians to govern themselves might be preserved, enriched and bequeathed.

May we too be so prepared. May we strive to combat the terror and ignorance that afflicts our society with the fortitude of our departed fellow citizens. By their blood, in their names, the democratic sacrament is renewed.
