I'm especially pissed about "Wavin' Flag". Such a good song used by such a scumbag.
edit: fixed title

Mitt Romney using "Wavin' Flag" as a campaign song is one of the most hilarious things.

What's hilarious is the unsurprising fact that the Obama campaign is the first in history to have their own "official album." It's kind of like how Nero played the fiddle while Rome burned...

It's really not like that at all.

Not least since it's historically attested.

I'm surprised any campaign would be playing songs without permission from the artists.

McCain, if memory serves, got into some minor trouble for using a John Mellencamp song (Mellencamp is VERY left-wing) last time around.

They tend to think copyright laws apply only on the internet.

Republicans have done this before, it is nothing new.

Nah, not really. They just don't think copyright laws apply to them.

I'm actually always surprised Republicans haven't tried (or at least threatened) to weaken copyright laws in order to get back at them for this sort of behavior.

In 1988, Bobby McFerrin objected to GHWB to using "Don't Worry, Be Happy."

This is nothing new.

And in Germany in 2005, the Rolling Stones objected to the CDU using Angie. You know, because of Angie Merkel. Who listens to foreign language lyrics, anyways?

The funny thing is that people that people search don't worry be happy as a bob marley song.
edit: how bad would it be to use a Bob Marley song politically? I am guessing only Ron Paul would have enough balls to do that. Maybe Kucinich too.

Bob Marley's music is too optomistic about the future to get involved with the core messages of major party politics.

Don't Democrats do the same with songs by conservative leaning musicians?

More likely the artists are no longer the rights holders.  Unlike Europe, U.S. copyright law does not generally recognize the concept of an inalienable moral right to determine how their songs are used. That makes using a song the artist doesn't want used by a political campaign a PR problem, not a copyright problem.

I'm not familiar with any conservative-leaning musicians who have been used in such way.

Was it "Pink Houses"? If so that's hilarious since that is so not a patriotic song, it's funny Republicans use songs like that without paying any attention to the lyrics beyond a few lines in the chorus (much like "Born in the USA")

They are a rare species, aren't they?

Lee Greenwood has been known to endorse conservative primary challangers. Charlie Daniels hangs out with Sean Hannity all the time, so he might be a conservative. Bono supported McCain but is fairly liberal on a number of issues like Gun Control. And then of course there is Hank Williams Jr.

This happens every year.  It doesn't really last as a headline for more than a day.  Although, it's obnoxious of the GOP to do it.

How much you wanna bet Naso loves that song and believes it's a patriotic anthem?

Naso believes Jack and Diane were being benifited by his hero Ronald Reagan, so go figure.
