It was not commonly known at the time. My aunt was in show business, so she "knew" about the Marilyn Monroe stuff, but in general it just didn't get out there on the Fruited Plain. The press did not consider that any more appropriate to report upon than FDR's wheelchair status.

if the public had known about JFK's womanizing, he would have never been nominated, much less elected.  And if he had had a Monica type of scandal while in office, he would have been forced to resign.

One of the main reasons Clinton escaped was that the questions asked of him during his grand jury testimony were clearly vindictive...if Congress had never voted to release that taped testimony, Clinton would have been gone within days. When the tape was released, I listened to it over headphones from work, and called my wife and said, “Something is not right about this.” 

Calls to the Capitol were running 5:1 against Clinton prior to the release of the grand jury tape. But once the public watched the tape, calls to the Capitol swung in Clinton’s favor.

What about LBJ's escapades? I read that he once showed off his large...Johnson...for bragging rights, and rivaled Kennedy in womanizing (we prefer the JFK stories because he was young and attractive, and also because he boned Marilyn Monroe)

There were rumors.  The true believers either didn't believe it or didn't care (or wished it was them).  Everybody else just assumed it was true or didn't care.
