Roger Stone, infamous Nixon dirty trickster, has a piece out today on the likelihood of a contested convention.  He makes a compelling case it is a reasonable possibility.  Towards the end of the piece, he also suggests Jeb Bush might be reconsidering.

Stone lives in Miami where Bush lives so he might have a source or two on this topic.  I suspect it's conjecture on his part, but Jeb has been circling the country making speeches and developing something that looks an awful lot like a national campaign platform.

I don't believe Bush will run, but I think all bets are off if Mitt underperforms in Michigan and on Super Tuesday.  Polls still indicate Obama is beatable and I think it will be much harder to win in 2016 than most believe.

I think any of these white knights are highly unlikely, and would only be viable if the base could be made actively to dislike Santorum. If they continue to like him, they'll process any new candidate as an elite attempt to deny them their will.

My assumption is those voting for Santorum are merely doing it so they can vote against Romney.  Conservatives just don't like him.  I don't think there is any great love for Santorum either, especially after the last week where he's made social issues everything.

I just strongly believe the party regulars who run campaigns and raise money will not get behind Santorum or Newt.  I think they'll try anything and everything to win even if Romney goes down.

It's not going to happen, but the disappointment with the current crop of losers has a lot of people dreaming of a lot of things.

There's some pretty fatuous stuff in that Roger Stone piece, that feels more like a hatchet job on Romney than a reasoned analysis. Like this:

"Further, Romney's Mormon faith is a negative factor. After Elie Wiesel's relatives recently appeared on a Mormon baptism list, Wiesel publicly called on Romney "speak to his own church and say they should stop." This is a losing issue for Romney -- you do not want to be in a public fight with the most celebrated Holocaust survivor in the world. The Jewish vote will certainly not support Romney in the general should he be the nominee."

According to the exit polls, Jewish voters picked Obama over McCain, 78-21. Granted, converting Elie Wiesel's ancestors won't win many new Jewish votes, but there aren't realistically that many up for grabs.

Because, unlike your guy, I think he can actually win and it's not too late to get stuck with two surefire losers in Santorum and Romney.

Ugh, he should build a base for 2016, I have a feeling it won't be quite our year.

Yep.  Sadly, I agree 2012 is going to be a disaster.  Right now, Romney is giving a speech in Ford Field to 1200 people.  He moved it there because he thought everyone wanted to hear him.  Instead, he's speaking to a cavernous, empty dome.

Let's hope that Sirhan Sirhan doesn't treat him like he's Bobby Kennedy.
