Rick Santorum is a serious candidate for the Republican nomination.
Which means, by extension, that the Republican Party is a serious candidate for obliteration.

Why shouldn't he be? For those who think he shouldn't be considered a serious candidate, name an issue on which he is out of sync with the core Republican position. For better or worse, Rick embodies the current Republican Party best of the four remaining candidates.

Perhaps the Tea Party, evangelical, socially conservative, right wing base, but I doubt very much Santorum has great appeal to independents, moderates, and potential cross over Democrats.

This is what happens when all of the top tier choices decide not to run. You end up with a bunch candidates who would otherwise be afterthoughts. That's the story of 2012. Jeb, Christie, Daniels, Thune, Ryan, and Pence all said no.
I read a piece by Conrad Black today and he lamented this very thing. In a year when so much is wrong with the country (unemployment, energy, economy), all who chose to run were the clowns. Compare that to 1968 when this country was a mess and Humphrey, Nixon, and Reagan, all big names, did run. It's a shame for the debate and the country.

There really isn't that much wrong with Santorum relative to the others, except his political positions if you disagree with them.

Of course not, if he did he would not be appealing to the GOP base. Seriously, though this really does show how completely insane the entire Republican Party is.
