why did he lose re-election in 2000 in Delaware. If you've been in office for a certain period of time, I would think you would be a shoo-in for re-election. Not only did he lose but he lost by twelve points which is rare for someone with that amount of seniority. What happened?

He was really old (even collapsing during a campaign event) and like many Republicans in Democratic states, was hurt significantly by the nomination of George W. Bush for president. Dodd, for example, would have lost in 2010 despite his nearly unmatched seniority.

Two things from what I understand,

1. He was old and his age somewhat limited him in his abilty to counter a strong oppenent in the form of popular outgoing governor Tom Carper.

2. He pledged to not run for another term and then turned around and broke that promise.

He collapsed on stage during a campaign rally, and that pretty much finished him on the age issue.

Roth was already considered fairly vulnerable in 1994, but was aided with a Republican wave and weak opposition. In 2000 he was really old (and what Mr. Moderate said), plus he faced a popular Governor.
