There are other races that are more important for the DSCC to shore up.

What I've read is that Nebraska has weird election laws in terms of filling for office. Incumbents must file by Feb. 15, regardless of whether they're seeking re-election or running for some different office. While non-incumbents have until March 1 to file to run. This means that Gov. Dave Heineman missed his chance to jump into the race, which was rumored before Bob Kerrey said he wouldn't. Anyone think that Kerrey's camp knew about this and used it to try to prevent Heineman from entering the race?

Great news. I know Kerrey may lose this. But don't forget that the GOP candidates aren't specially brillant... so, even in Nebraska, if republicans nominate a big nutter, they could lose.

I think that could be Don Stenburg; he's the tea party candidate. Jon Bruning is more the establishment.

I could see Kerrey possibly holding the seat against Stenburg.

This reminds me of Tommy Thompson every 2 years after the year 2000.

Any more "reconsideration" and he'll still be "reconsidering" long after the filing deadline.

Also, I admit I don't know much about Nebraska, but hasn't it swung ridiculously hard to the right compared to Kerrey's years in office?

I just don't see the Democrats winning this... I suppose we might crack 40%, though.

Latest from the Omaha World-Herald:

http://www.omaha.com/article/20120227/NEWS01/702279925#bob-kerrey-has-until-thursday-for-senate-decision

"Some Democrats made it clear they weren't happy, notably Chuck Hassebrook of Lyons, Neb.

He ran for Senate rather than seek re-election as an NU regent after Kerrey got out. Hassebrook essentially said Monday that Kerrey's “integrity” is at stake.

“Bob Kerrey is a man of integrity. He told me as recently as a few days ago that he would assist my campaign. I gave up my seat on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents based on his word. I do not believe he would go back on it,” he said."

At least to me, he sounds not yet to have firmly decided to run or not to run.

Probably Chuck Hassebrook's remarks gave him pause to ponder as he is a decent guy who won't easily go back on his word.  I'm sure there is lots of pressure for him to run.  But if Atty Gen Bruning wins the nomination for the GOP, Kerry will not win.

Why is Kerrey labeled as a Lieberman-like Democrat? From what I understand his voting record was quite liberal, especially compared to Ben Nelson.

Yep. Here's how Ontheissues.com rates them:

Nelson does do a tad better on the 'War Criminal - Not a War Criminal' axis, though.
