I was thinking it would be neat to have a Canadian version of this forum I could have for my blog (since I'd eventually like my blog to turn into a Canadian version of this site).

Anyways, does anyone know what the best free forum site is these days? It's been many, many years since I had my own forums.

Do you have an archive of Canadian election maps as extensive as this site does?

No, but I plan to, eventually.

Well, you should begin with the beginning. Wink

Maybe I posted this in the wrong forum....

Really, I was just looking to see if anyone knew any good forum companies I could use.

Simple Machine Forums is free software, but you'd have to pay for the domain name and hosting.  When I started the Young Republicans in Wayne County, we used a free forum that had a "z" in it, but I'm having a hard time remembering it, and I haven't been involved, so I can't find it on Facebook anymore.

Well, if we're looking for completely free, try this.  The message boards they offer are still free, last time I used it.  Of course, you wouldn't be able to store electoral maps and archive things the way the Atlas does.  You have to pay for pretty much anything beyond the basic message board no matter what company or software you go with.

Also, if you do start this forum, please don't advertise about it here.  I love Canadian elections, and I already spend way too much time on this forum.  I don't need a second one stealing more of my time... Grin

Well, forumotion has decent forum software that is hosted for free on their website.  However, you will have to settle with living in a subdomain (canadianelections.forumotion.com).  If you want your own domain, you will have to pay for hosting.  The good news is you can get good hosting for a few bucks a month.  The bad news is if you want to run a site as big as The Atlas, you will need to be prepared to shell out a good bit more than that.

Also, if you do start this forum, please don't advertise about it here.

If you think about it long and hard enough (please don't take that as sexually explicit) I'm sure you could find something in the ToS to twist into banning any mention of it or other forums.

Well, at that point, we might consider than results threads during the primary is advertisement for CNN, Google or AP.

Anyways, does anyone know what the best free forum site is these days? It's been many, many years since I had my own forums.

It would be good (and potentially more popular) if you extended it to cover UK, Australian, NZ politics.

He could just do it as a site for the Commonwealth.

I wont advertise it in one of your Forums, Inks... if that's what you mean... but saying I can't do something makes me want to do it more. Cheesy

But, I do see my blog as an extension of sorts from this forum, as some members here (Smid, MaxQue, Shilly) have provided maps for me. Also, I started it with the encouragement of forum members.

The problem with creating a Canadian version of this forum now is there isn't going to be any Canadian election for awhile and it'd be quite boring. Better to start out the extensive maps so there'd be something to discuss.

Hmm, good point.

I also want to do interactive predictions like on this site, but my knowledge of how to do that is non existent. I do have a friend that might be able to take on the challenge though. I'm just not sure how willing people will be doing over 300 predictions, as opposed to the 50 on this site.
