I'm not exactly a fan, but he seemed to be a tad more reasonable than Thatcher, Reagan, etc.

Never thought I'd say this, but I'm praying for another black-yellow majority, and for the SPD to get shattered. It's exactly what it deserves.

As a person, very nice, well mannered, certainly much nicer than Abbott or Costello.
I agree with 3 things he did in office:
* The introduction of the GST to provide funding for the states
* The intervention in East Timor (which the US avoided supporting too much to not upset Indonesia)
* The one I give him a lot of credit for was the reaction to the Port Arthur Massacre. It led to one of the most radical overhauls of Australia's already tight gun laws. He had to stand up to his own supporters.
But I lost a TON of respect for him when he blew the dog-whistle in the 2001 election. He went too hard too soon on workplace relations reforms. He was too slow to react to climate change.
On balance, HP... just, but he's a darn-sight better than Abbott.
