On January 1, 2011, they were in charge of a country or of another kind of world power. On December 31, 2011, they weren't in power anymore. They have retired, lost reelection, were forced out of power or even killed. The year 2011 has brought change in an exceptionally high number of places : enough to justify a survivor. Smiley

I defined the country's leader as the person who effectively holds the most power : therefore, the President in presidential regimes and the PM in parliamentary regimes (but there might be exceptions). I have also added 3 people who aren't country leaders but have led equally important institutions : Dominique Strauss-Kahn for the IMF, Jean-Claude Trichet for the ECB and Osama Bin Laden for Al-Quaeda. I think the impact of these organizations on world justifies their inclusion.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil) - 1 January
Zine El Abidine Ben Ali (Tunisia) - 14 January
Hosni Mubarak (Egypt) - 11 February
Brian Cowen (Ireland) - 9 March
Salou Djibo (Niger) - 7 April
Osama bin Laden (Al Quaeda) - 2 May
Pere López Agràs (Andorra) - 12 May
René Préval (Haiti) - 14 May
Dominique Strauss-Kahn (International Monetary Fund) - 18 May
Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi (Comoros) - 26 May
Saad Hariri (Lebanon) - 13 June
José Sócrates (Portugal) - 21 June
Mari Kiviniemi (Finland) - 22 June
Alan García (Peru) - 28 July
Michael Somare (Papua New Guinea) - 2 August
Abhisit Vejjajiva (Thailand) - 5 August
Muammar Gaddafi (Libya) - ousted from Tripoli 23 August / killed 20 October
Jhala Nath Khanal (Nepal) - 29 August
Naoto Kan (Japan) - 2 September
Fradique de Menezes (São Tomé and Príncipe) - 3 September
Rupiah Banda (Zambia) - 23 September
Lars Løkke Rasmussen (Denmark) - 3 October
Marouf al-Bakhit (Jordan) - 24 October
Jean-Claude Trichet (European Central Bank) - 31 October
George Papandreou (Greece) - 11 November
Freddie Pitcher (Nauru) - 15 November
Silvio Berlusconi (Italy) - 16 November SURVIVOR
Ali Abdullah Saleh (Yemen) - 23 November
Abbas El Fassi (Morocco) - 29 November
Stephenson King (Saint Lucia) - 30 November
Almazbek Atambayev (Kyrgyzstan) - 1 December
Bharrat Jagdeo (Guyana) - 3 December
Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah (Kuwait) - 4 December
Yves Leterme (Belgium) - 6 December
Kim Jong-il (North Korea) - 17 December
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (Spain) - 21 December
Jadranka Kosor (Croatia) - 23 December
Igor Smirnov (Transnistria) - 30 December

You are free to vote based on the criteria you prefer, but in order to make the survivor funnier and more interesting, I'd like you to not consider a leader's personal qualities, but rather criteria like the type of events that led to his departure and its political signifiance. For example, Bin Laden or Kim Jong-Il, shouldn't be the first ones to go...

Anyways, lets start. Round 1 begins, you have 1 vote to eliminate.

This survivor is beginning very badly... Cry Cowen should have been a top contender, being the protagonist of one of the craziest elections ever !

Let's bring back some sense : eliminate Freddie Pitcher (who gives a sh*t about Nauru ?).

That's what makes it so great. DSK is a top contender for survivor, in my book.

I would say Agràs again (although I would have picked the actual PM [Jaume Barumeu] at the time for the survivor rather than the acting, but whatevs) but it seems like Pitcher has more momentum.

So Freddie Pitcher it is.
