On January 1, 2011, they were in charge of a country or of another kind of world power. On December 31, 2011, they weren't in power anymore. They have retired, lost reelection, were forced out of power or even killed. The year 2011 has brought change in an exceptionally high number of places : enough to justify a survivor. I defined the country's leader as the person who effectively holds the most power : therefore, the President in presidential regimes and the PM in parliamentary regimes (but there might be exceptions). I have also added 3 people who aren't country leaders but have led equally important institutions : Dominique Strauss-Kahn for the IMF, Jean-Claude Trichet for the ECB and Osama Bin Laden for Al-Quaeda. I think the impact of these organizations on world justifies their inclusion. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil) - 1 JanuaryZine El Abidine Ben Ali (Tunisia) - 14 JanuaryHosni Mubarak (Egypt) - 11 February Brian Cowen (Ireland) - 9 MarchSalou Djibo (Niger) - 7 AprilOsama bin Laden (Al Quaeda) - 2 MayPere López Agràs (Andorra) - 12 MayRené Préval (Haiti) - 14 MayDominique Strauss-Kahn (International Monetary Fund) - 18 MayAhmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi (Comoros) - 26 MaySaad Hariri (Lebanon) - 13 JuneJosé Sócrates (Portugal) - 21 JuneMari Kiviniemi (Finland) - 22 JuneAlan García (Peru) - 28 JulyMichael Somare (Papua New Guinea) - 2 AugustAbhisit Vejjajiva (Thailand) - 5 AugustMuammar Gaddafi (Libya) - ousted from Tripoli 23 August / killed 20 OctoberJhala Nath Khanal (Nepal) - 29 AugustNaoto Kan (Japan) - 2 SeptemberFradique de Menezes (São Tomé and Príncipe) - 3 SeptemberRupiah Banda (Zambia) - 23 SeptemberLars Løkke Rasmussen (Denmark) - 3 OctoberMarouf al-Bakhit (Jordan) - 24 OctoberJean-Claude Trichet (European Central Bank) - 31 OctoberGeorge Papandreou (Greece) - 11 NovemberFreddie Pitcher (Nauru) - 15 NovemberSilvio Berlusconi (Italy) - 16 November SURVIVOR Ali Abdullah Saleh (Yemen) - 23 NovemberAbbas El Fassi (Morocco) - 29 NovemberStephenson King (Saint Lucia) - 30 NovemberAlmazbek Atambayev (Kyrgyzstan) - 1 DecemberBharrat Jagdeo (Guyana) - 3 DecemberNasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah (Kuwait) - 4 DecemberYves Leterme (Belgium) - 6 DecemberKim Jong-il (North Korea) - 17 DecemberJosé Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (Spain) - 21 DecemberJadranka Kosor (Croatia) - 23 DecemberIgor Smirnov (Transnistria) - 30 DecemberYou are free to vote based on the criteria you prefer, but in order to make the survivor funnier and more interesting, I'd like you to not consider a leader's personal qualities, but rather criteria like the type of events that led to his departure and its political signifiance. For example, Bin Laden or Kim Jong-Il, shouldn't be the first ones to go... Anyways, lets start. Round 1 begins, you have 1 vote to eliminate.

Truer today than it was yesterday. "A good portion of this country has created an alternate universe. I call this place were these folks live Bullsh*t Mountain. The denizens of Bullsh*t Mountain believe many things: they believe that a Kenyan Muslim President has fundamentally changed the relationship between government and the people of this country."Jon Stewart
