To be fair, Gingrich's staff has been wanting him to quit for about a year now.

Newt's just in this for the fun. It's a 50 state 2 year holiday doing what he loves.

Yes, and the Gingrich staffer said Newt should drop out and they should put their allegiance behind:

DeLinda Ridings, who supported Jon Huntsman before becoming one of Gingrich's regional directors in South Carolina, told WIS-TV on Wednesday that it was time for the former Speaker to exit the campaign.

"[Gingrich] has tried really hard, but I think it's time to drop, and it's time to put our allegiance behind the man that I believe can beat Barack Obama, and that's Mitt Romney," Ridings told a reporter.

Staying in is what's keeping Romney alive.

Newt's going to win MS and AL and then rocket back into the 30s nationally briefly before being destroyed in IL. Santorum will then win the Missouri caucus and become the anti-Romney again.

I'm not sure he'll win MS.

A facet of the Romney strategy

Attack Gingrich with negative ads to the extent that he becomes so embittered that nothing will compel him to withdraw from the race.

Although, at this point, I rather suspect it is too late to change the outcome of a Romney victory.

Too bad Missouri is before Illinois...

I don't even think it's that complex.  Gingrich isn't in it for ideology (he almost never is) - he's in it for his ego (I've been saying this for years).
