The Assembly will now consider the legislation introduced by the Representative from Rhode Island. Debate will last 72 hours.
Quote
All students in Northeast schools will wear uniforms K-12.
Uniforms for girls will consist of a blazer, white shirt, tie, skirt or slacks.
Uniforms for boys will consist of a blazer, white shirt, tie, slacks.
Each school will be free to choose colors for the uniforms.

Thank you Mr. Speaker.
Let me begin this debate by giving my reasons why school uniforms will be beneficial.
Educators believe that students in uniform are more likely to focus on academics. This concept of professionalism doesn't just exist in education; it's why so many employers are also required to wear certain attire.
Sociologists and K-12 experts report students in uniform behave more appropriately in school environments. The belief arises from uniforms dictating a stricter atmosphere that encourages students to follow the rules. Violence in uniform schools is lower than other schools.
In non-uniform schools, clothing and fashion often act the root of social conflict. Students segregate themselves by what they wear: the jocks, the goths, the emos, the nerds. With uniforms, students are brought into a neutral zone that makes social relationships easier.
Experts believe a couple of uniforms is more affordable than a large wardrobe of trendy clothing.
Of course, uniforms will be age appropriate for all age groups in school.

I think this is an issue that should be left to the communities and local school districts. Mandating something like this region-wide would, frankly, just take us down the path to nannystatehood and put a monetary burden on schools that might not be able to afford uniforms.

I think that decisions about schooling are best left to local school districts wherever possible.

Erm, no. It removes the individuality of students (which schools already do) and would cost the schools extra money when many are already in debt.
As for the claim about self-segregation, it would continue; people can find others in their clan quite easily.
However, I may support the bill depending on how tight the female uniforms are.

Debate time has expired. The Assembly will now proceed to a final vote. This vote will last 24 hours, or until all members have voted.
