At this point I'm completely lost. What is ''the mission'' in Afghanistan?

If you advocate staying there, what do you imagine will be accomplished in X amount of years?

Should have been clearer:

What is the United States' mission in Afghanistan?

Presumably to kill some people who live there.

Initial strategy decisions would strongly imply that my answer still stands.

I am not sure if it has changed but a November 2010 report to Congress from the DoD states:

The Department of Defense seems to defer on the issue of Afghanistan to the ISAF, which offers:

Kick ass and chew bubble gum. Unfortunately we have been all out of bubble gum since the fall of 2001.

The "mission" under Obama is to get as many Americans killed and wounded as possible, while wasting as much money as possible.

The mission is to defeat Al Qaeda/Taliban and their enablers which many believe will come naturally from a democracy... meaning the mission is to create a stable democracy...some one sent me a video of a convoy ambushed while scouting out polling locations for local elections

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH... THEY DON'T WANT US THERE ANY MORE THEN THEY WANTED THE RUSSIANS THERE...I refuse to support our men and women dying for the benefit of people who want us gone

I really feel badly for what I'm only guessing, perhaps wrongly, are the bulk of the Afghan people.  There options are: 1. to be ruled over by a corrupt, inept and uncaring Karzai government: 2. to be bullied, beaten and killed by Taliban tyrants who were originally a Pakistan-created occupation force: 3. to be inadequately protected by, and occasionally have their civilians killed by either accident or by soldiers who have gone bats^*t crazy among, American forces.  They really have nowhere to turn.

In any case, given the facts that al Qaeda has almost entirely been eliminated in Afghanistan, the Taliban are unbeatable there without a march larger commitment of ground troops, and the Karzai government is hardly worth protecting itself, I agree we should just leave.  Wars are meant to achieve political ends, but after eleven years, things are only slowly getting worse.  Time to go already.

The mission has been to funnel proceeds from sale of US treasury debt to defense contractors under the guise of security, rebuilding, development, etc.

Yeah, that's it. *rolls eyes*

But yeah in theory the objective is to secure the current Afghan Government and prop it up as a stable American client state. But in practice I think it's to pull out as "honorably" as possible, and maybe (with the aid of Pakistan) broker a backroom peace deal between the Karzai government and the Taliban.

To be honest even though I opposed the Invasion of Iraq initially, looking back I would rather we just invaded Iraq and not Afghanistan.
