Great article, really worth reading. Also, hilarious.

Odd to think the CPGB managed to get more parliamentary representation than UKIP ever has.

Not really; Communist support was always very concentrated (both geographically and in other ways). Of course they lost even that after the Soviet Union started pointing nukes at us.

If a novelist wrote that he would be attacked for using too much obviously ironic symbolism.

Guess it's a question of perspective & choice of narrative method ...

... and that, by the way, is also one of the reasons why none of Eric Hobsbawm's books has been turned into a succesful Broadway musical so far.

The bit about Rodell Properties is especially good.

Not to mention the invasion of Hungary in 1956.

That was more when the members started bailing. Electoral base long gone by then: even Willie Gallacher lost by 33pts (and came third) in 1950.

Seems about right. My papa was a CPGB member in the 1930's. It was the war that severed his affiliation apparently due to his interactions with the Garibaldi Brigades in the Italian campaign; never had the stomach for 'military' socialism. Liked Tito though.

This is very funny, but at the same time not very surprising!
