The Parliamentary Labour Party has elected its new chairman last night (Tony Lloyd is off to become a Police Commissioner in Greater Manchester). The result was as follow

Dave Watts (St Helens North MP) 138 votes
John Cryer (Leyton and Wanstead) 88 votes

It's time for Labour members to elect their representatives on Labour NEC again. The 6 incumbents are running again. Overall 21 candidates are taking part to the nomination process (you have to get your own CLP nomination + at least 2 CLPs from 2 different regions).
The Labour First/Progess slate is composed by: Ellie Reeves, Luke Akehurst, Peter Wheeler, Florence Nosegbe, Ruth Smeeth and Joanne Milligan)

Reeves and Akehurst are incumbent. Wheeler has served on the NEC for many years before losing out in 2010. Nosegbe is a Lambeth Cllr, Smeeth stood in Burton in 2010 GE while Milligan is from Scotland (I think she was the party "favoured" candidate for Airdrie & Shotts last time) but I think she now lives in London.
Reeves is the sister of the one who is in the Shadow Cabinet and she usually poll a bit better than other Labour First candidates as she has connections more widespread in the Labour party internal spectrum (her partner is left wign MP John Cryer).

The Left is not truly compacted (it was split last time too). Grassroots Alliance and Campaign for Labour Party Democracy are supporting Ann Black, Ken Livingstone, Kate Osamor, Christine Shawcroft, Darren Williams and Peter Willsman. Labour Representation Committee (aka John McDonnell's fans club) is bidding for Shawcroft and Gary Heather.
Black, Ken and Shawcroft are incumbent. Ken, well, I guess he doesn't need presentations. He topped the ballot last time but this time he is quite down in terms of CLPs nominations so far  (well behind Black and level pegging with Reeves and Shawcroft).
Black is the moderate of the slate. She usually tops the ballot (when high profile names like Livingstone were not in the race). Shawcroft is at other end: somewhere on the very very Left of the party. Willsman has been on the NEC before (like Wheeler he surprisingly lost out in 2010 where the turnout was very high because the election took place alongside the Leadership contest) and IIRC he's a former Bennite organizer from the 80's London political scene. As for the new candidates, Darren Williams comes from Wales, Kate Osamor is from Tottenham and Gary Heather is Islington North CLP Chair.

The main independent is Johanna Baxter who joined the NEC when Oona King became the Baroness of Bow. IIRC she was part of Ed Balls' leadership campaign. She's from London (Southwark). The CLP section of the NEC has always been accused to being too "London-centric".
Other independents running are Lewis Atkinson (from Tyneside), Shaukat Ali (a Cllrs in Dudley. He run for Labour First last time), John Wiseman (a left winger from North West), Narinder Matharoo (Cllr in Waltham Forest), Zahida Abbas Noori (an Ealing Cllr who was announced as a defector to the Tories during the by-election campaign only to deny it the following day), Darrell Goodliffe and Theresa Griffin (a former Euro candidate from Liverpool). Some of them don't have the required nominations yet.

National Policy Forum members are up for re-election too. The 2010 contest was the first OMOV election for NPF. I don't have a clue on who is running this time as NPF never got an high profile. The Right/Left slates are supporting their own candidates. I have seen some leaflets but I don't a full picture in all regions.

Nominations for NEC/NPF candidates close on March 30th. Ballot papers will go around in May until mid June.

Goes without saying by now, surely? Sad

Baxter might currently be based in London, but she's Scottish. Voted for her last time and will do again.

I actually knew it. She's originally from Ayrshire (I think Cunninghame North in particular). But I was probably too tired to recall it when I reached her after the whole Labour First/Grassroots Alliance slates

Number of CLP nominations for effectively nominated candidates

Ann Black (Grassroots Alliance) 333 CLPs
Christine Shawcroft (GA) 203
Ken Livingstone (GA) 195
Ellie Reeves (Labour First) 189
Johanna Baxter (Ind) 172
Luke Akehurst (LF) 160
Peter Willsman (GA) 149
Peter Wheeler (LF) 147
Kate Osamor (GA) 103
Darren Williams (GA) 84
Joanne Milligan (LF) 76
Ruth Smeeth (LF) 71
Florence Nosegbe (LF) 69
Gary Heather (LRC/GA) 49
Lewis Atkinson (Ind) 39
Shaukat Ali (Ind) 20
Rajwant Sidhu (Ind) 7
Darrell Goodliffe (Ind) 5
Rob Carr (Ind) 4
Lynda Rice (Ind) 4

Comparison with last time for candidates who stood in 2010 too: Baxter +107, Akehurst +77, Black +58 CLPs,  Shawcroft +43, Wheeler +15; Willsman +12; Reeves +7; Livingstone -40; Ali -32

Overall number of nominations up from 1,730 to 2,079. Ali was in the official Labour First slate last time unlike this year, so this can explain his big decrease. I suppose Ken is down because he's seen a bit more "controversial" now

Ellie Reeves (Labour First) 23,417
Christine Shawcroft (GA) 22,236
Johanna Baxter (Ind) 20,146
Peter Wheeler (LF) 17,721

Kate Osamor (GA) 17,598
Luke Akehurst (LF) 17,475
Peter Willsman (GA) 16,786
Darren Williams (GA) 14,641
Florence Nosegbe (LF) 12,745
Ruth Smeeth (LF) 10,860
Joanne Milligan (LF) 10,034
Lewis Atkinson (Ind) 8,968
Shaukat Ali (Ind) 6,855
Darrell Goodliffe (Ind) 6,147
Rob Carr (Ind) 4,386
Lynda Rice (Ind) 4,864

Usual close race for the last place. Wheeler comes back taking Akerhust's place. The other incumbents are re-elected (including Baxter who was 7th last time and got in once Oona King resigned to go to the Lords)

Who actually votes for Christine Shawcroft? When Blair was leader, I used to find her report back entertaining because of her perennial bitching about everything he said or done under the Leader's Report.
I am actually disappointed for Akerhust as I think, regardless of his political stances, he has something to offer in terms of party structure and organizational skills.

Reeves confirms herself as the LF with the highest vote. Being an household name (Ken) proves to be enough to top the poll.

The fact Ken finished first just shows how inane these name recognition contests are.

is the NPF Youth Representative election basically a contest on who has more friends?

It's a pleasure! :-)

Nice to see Wheeler back; good to have someone representing Not London. Baxter re-elected (and elected properly for the first time) is objectively positive or something. Bit of a shame about Akehurst, but that's what happens when you carry yourself in the way that he does. And the traditional 'lol' about Shawcroft getting back on again.

Of course a CLP section comprised of Livingstone, Black, Reeves, Shawcroft, Baxter and Wheeler means that the political diversity of the membership is nicely reflected in its representatives. Shawcroft might be useless and of questionable sanity, but a significant percentage of Party members do hold hard left views. And so on.

Obviously name recognition is a factor, but it also reflects the fact that London CLPs are larger than CLPs elsewhere for reasons that go back to the 1920s. Anyways, note that Black and Reeves are always pretty safe; that's not because of name recognition but because they're responsive and productive representatives who avoid factional bomb-throwing.
