What about Meg Whitman for Vice President?
In 2008? No. Maybe for Romney in 2012 if she had won the Governor's race but not in 2008.

Nah, both Pro Choice and a Businesswoman.

Though obviously only the former would've created a problem for Romney. But still too much of one to countance serious discussion. Not to mention if they really wanted someone from NJ that year.....
Christie's scandals, huge personality, and his reputation with teachers would've sank him.

He said prior to the convention he was considering voting for Obama. That KINDA would've killed his chances right there. Add to the fact that he'd been out of Congress for 6 years at that point and it would look like laughably obvious pandering solely in response to Obama's nomination.

Tim Pawlenty would have been ruled out due to Larry Craig MN fiasco and after that event they should have moved convention site.

My understanding from a friend who was involved with his VP selection is that it was to be Pawlenty but for some personal baggage that surfaced. Palin was a 9th inning swap out.

If I were him, I would have gone for Linda Lingle. She's like Sarah Palin but minus the pregnant teenager and stupidity.

The fact that she's probably a lesbian may have thrown off some people, though.

Oh well, then it had to be someone like a Tim Pawlenty since Romney had been ruled out.

Condoleeza Rice would have been a really cool pick. I think she might have been the only choice who could reverse Bush's sagging approval numbers because of her strong defense of his foreign policy. If they shouldn't be that connected to the Bush administration, Pataki, Bloomberg, or Christine Todd Whitman would all be pretty good.

Huckabee. He had a populist anger that would have resonated with voters.

John Thune came to mind. T-Paw certainly was the most vetted candidate, versus Sarah the Clueless. My choice would have been Crist or Lieberman, after pledging a 1 term limit as a "unity" pledge, the problem would be the base's turnout. Only problem with Condi is that she was to closely associated to the Bush Administration, which by the Veepstakes, McCain had already tried to run from.

The base liked her more than Powell. I think she could have been successful enough in speaking that she could have boosted Bush's approvals by 2-3, and McCain would make gains in Indiana and the AA vote in NC & VA. The sheer contrast between her and BIDEN at the debate would be great.

Overall, Rice means:
1.5% swing among white men
3.25% swing among white women
3.0% swing among black men
6.5% swing among black women
0.25% swing among Hispanic men
0.75% swing among Hispanic women
0.5% swing among Other men
0.75% swing among Other women
3.5% swing for Bush approval

It doesn't matter. There is nothing that could be done for McCain to win...

I believe Sarah Palin was a terrible choice. I disliked it from the beginning (though I still voted McCain). I was expecting perhaps Eric Cantor or someone more establishment.

Probably true, but either Romney or Pawlenty would have made the race closer.

^In "Game Change," it is said that McCain learned he would get Lieberman nominated by the convention, but there would probably be a walk out. It would have severely depressed the base's turnout. He needed someone who excited the base as well as Palin did, while not turning off independents, which was another huge cause of picking Palin.
Werent they other people who could have done better like ron paul instead of palin?

I still think that McCain had to choose a woman as his running mate, who could have picked up all those votes of the bitterly disappointed Clinton supporters, preferably a minority candidate.
With that said, his best choices would have been Condoleezza Rice or, even better, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen from the most important swing state.
Oh god, Rice would've been a disaster, not only was she Bush's Secretary of State, but she was also Pro Choice.
Would have been better then palin

Hindsight is 20/20, but I truly believe that Palin was a worthwhile gamble given all the upsides that appeared with her on paper and that came when she gave her first few fiery speeches.

Obviously more vetting would have been helpful, but they only dreamed her up at the last minute and were working under constraints. Good for McCain for taking a huge game-changing risk.

Tim Pawlenty; truly a "do no harm" kind of VP.
