Would he run for a third term to ensure a moderate path on Reconstruction? I was thinking of a TL where he served for 4 terms before retiring in 1876, with the GOP losing control of the house in 1874 or 76 at latest (perhaps even 1870). Then Samuel Tilden wins on a tariff reduction/anti-GOP platform. Would Lincoln be remembered as a good president as ITTL? Is this realistic? Would you be interested in reading it? As an afterthought, maybe Winfield Scott retains his post as General in Chief or Robert E. Lee accepts Lincoln's offer. Thoughts?
