When looking at voting coalitions, it seems like the way Obama has won is the same way Lindsay did in 1965 and 1969. Anyone here agree?

The part has been going in that direction since McCarthy and McGovern.

well although Lindsay was a republican then, I would say Obama and Lindsay weren't that different. Obama reminds me of him in the sense of him being somewhat of a reformer and coming from an Ivy League background and detractors of them saw them as ivory tower types. Also it seems that Obama and Lindsay both won election by racking up margins among the "exotic" types. In Lindsay's case the exotic types were the immigrant class in the south bronx and the trendy "hip" group in the silk stocking upper east side.

Becoming? More like became the party of John Lindsay.

Although, Lindsay was an idiot for the way he carried himself in his last years in office (and his 1972 presidential campaign). The guy had a 9% approval rating of "good" in 1972, with a 60% disapproval rating of "poor."

How is this failure of a mayor and a blight on the memory of New York City relevant at all to anything anywhere?

I think the OP was saying that the Dems are becoming as liberal as Lindsay. Or something along those lines.

I think the OP was saying that the Democratic Party's support largely stems from the same coalition that supported John Lindsay.

I always like to think, if rather glibly, that the coalition with which McGovern lost spectacularly in 1972 was the same one with which Obama was able to win four decades afterwards
