This deserves a thread on its own. I feel it could bring down the government.

Never seen such a half-baked policy Cheesy

We should have a UK discussion thread for stuff like this, and the emerging petrol fiasco.

Don't we already have a UK General Discussion thread?

As a regular user of Greggs, I find this idea pretty stupid. A fast food tax I could get, but something based on whether it's heated first? No way.

The government's decided to extend VAT to all hot, pre-prepared foods. At one of the select committees, they asked Osborne about the effect it'd have on fast food take aways and other food shops like the popular pasty shop chain Greggs (which the government was heaping praise on the other week for hiring people) and he responded with something along the lines of "well, I don't remember the last time I even went to Greggs anyway", so it's been dubbed the 'Pasty Tax'. The tax'll inevitably harm such shops.

Pasty's are a stereotypically working class food. This is just pushing the 'out of touch Tories' mantra.

Yeah, ignore me. Confused the one we have as the polling thread.

How smarmy can one person be? Bet Eric Pickles had a right kick off over this when it came up in cabinet.

Why would an election be called? The LibDems don't want a rump, and Cameron doesn't want to lose. Anyways 2015 is a long ways away, and Labour is still led by Millibrand. This isn't going to matter to voters three years from now.

Yeah, I was hoping for a scandal to do with showgirl nipple-coverings, and instead it's about some kind of meat pie (and not the good kind!).  Hmph.

This story gets more and more serious by the hour: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2012/mar/29/pasty-row-david-cameron

This government is finished.

I hear Ed Miliband's put forward an EDM for a motion of no confidence...

It may even pass given the likely revolt from the entirety of the LibDem's West Country group of MPs over this most important of West Country issues.

Mebyon Kernow to give Ed Miliband confidence and supply after the election. Mark my words.

Maybe we can merge two problems from opposite sides of the Atlantic into one to solve it.  Exempt pasties made with pink slime from the VAT.
