I've you've seen Nairobi, you know you could live a life there on par with any city in Europe, in terms of accessibility of material goods. And it's an attractive country.

For one year, El Salvador. For a lifetime, Kenya.

How common are air conditioners and flush toilets in each? Everything else is secondary.

I can't speak for El Salvador, but in Kenya - "What is this Air Conditioner you speak of?  Oh, do you mean fans and cool breeze off Lake Victoria at night and open windows? Flush Toilets?  Oh yes, we've got those.  The water pressure isn't near as powerful as in America or in most of Europe, but still gets the job done."

Nairobi, and parts of Kisumu, are pretty modern cities.  I have a friend who graduated from the same high school I did a year later than I did who moved to Kenya shortly after high school and she says the medical facilities in Kisumu and Nairobi are pretty nice.  Other more rural areas are a little disturbing, but the major cities are fine.

In both Nairobi and Kisumu there is a Walmart type store called Nakumatt.  One of the stores in Kisumu is open 24-hours as well and provides everything you would find in a Walmart in America, except a little nicer to be honest.

I'd prefer Nicaragua or Tanzania.

I'm finding my passion is not just in the Republic of Kenya, but in the surrounding nations such as Tanzania, Uganda, and even South Sudan and Ethiopia and to some extent Somalia.  I'll probably focus on Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and possibly South Sudan.

I have another friend from high school who just moved to Cameroon, Africa which is in the western part of the continent, two time zones behind Kenya.

If you have money, you can have anything you want in the vast majority of the world. Even in places where the vast majority don't have access to these facilities.

Que Chivo! I lived in El Salvador for a year and loved it. The people there are incredibly caring and kind, plus it has an amazing history if you are into either liberation theology (Oscar Romero = most incredible human being to have walked this Earth) or the Latin American Revolutions.

Where would you be if you lived in El Salvador? While I was there I managed to get to 12 out of the 14 departments and lived in San Salvador/Antiguo Cuscatlan and Usulutan. Both were great places

When it comes to the violence you just have to be smart about where you travel to alone (don't take public buses alone on routes you have never traveled before). It was only rarely that I ever felt threatened.

.......I have no knowledge of Kenya, sorry!

Who the hell wants to be locked in a compound though? And without proper sanitation, disease has a way of spreading.

Who said anything about a compound? These facilities can usually be found in a variety of places, though lacking in rural areas in third world countries. You can find them all over the cities though, and don't need to lock down somewhere. Fair point about diseases though.
