I know his chances of getting elected is less than 50/50 at this point, but I am wondering if anyone else gets the feeling that if Romney gets elected he will be a dick Nixon retread.

Me thinks Tricky Mitt should stick to gutting companies and firing people as he laughs all the way to the bank.

Romney could well end up being a second Hoover.  After all, Hoover was touted as a guy with business experience who knew how to get things done and who wasn't a career politician. Indeed, some Democrats in 1920 (including Wilson and FDR) were hoping to get Hoover to run on their ticket, but he turned them down.

However, it is way too early to judge how a potential Romney presidency would turn out.

Let's try comparing him to other Presidential losers to incumbents since WWII:

2004 -- John Kerry? Well-meaning fellow who just couldn't relate well to the common man.

1996 -- Bob Dole? At least Bob Dole is a war hero.

1984 -- Walter Mondale? Mondale was nominated in essence for his "long and faithful service to his party".

1972 -- George McGovern? Easily (if wrongly) cast by the other side as an extremist.

1964 -- Barry Goldwater? See 1972.

1956 -- Adlai Stevenson? Ended up only with states associated somehow with the Confederacy. Second chance, which is a slight difference.

Mitt is the new Tricky Dick. But the country does not want or need a new Nixon. What we need is a new JFK or FDR but definitely not a new Nixon. Despite being a crook Nixon was smart, after watching Romney for the last couple months getting pummeled by team Obama the comparison to Nixon may be a bit generous in that regard.

This is probably the most appropriate comparison, although I suspect he'll be the inverse of GHWB in terms of preferring domestic policy over foreign policy and having his term defined by domestic challenges rather then foreign developments.

A majority of voters look forward to the next four years to decide who to vote for, not the last for. Someone polled that in June and Obama lead 51-something against Romney in voters concerned about the future.
The real question is "Will your family be better off four years from now under me, or Governor Romney...,", And my bet is that the answer will be "Obama." Elections are choices.

I've been saying for more than a year that for the GOP to nominate Romney this year is like nominating G.H.W. Bush in 1980.  He's obviously the Eastern Establishment candidate, just like Bush was in '80.
