Here's a map:

Clinton wins 392-146. Gingrich gains Kentucky but loses Colorado and Virginia.

If this is 1996, I think Clinton would have a small chance of winning Montana if Perot still ran.  Perot would get around 10%, instead of the 8.4% he actually got.

Why in the world would he lose Virginia and Colorado?

Philip, your map is quite optimistic for Gingrich;) Clinton would carry Virginia and Colorado because Gingrich would alienate moderate suburbanites in those states. Clinton would carry Fairfax, and do a lot better in NoVa overall.

I think Gingrich would have done just a couple of points better than Dole.

Why would Gingrich alienate moderate suburbanites? He's not really an extremist from what I can tell.

Nice job repeating another person's statement in a different way. Now maybe you could answer my question.

Moderate suburbanites voted for Clinton in '96 based largely on dislike for the right-wing Republican leadership in Congress. At that time, Gingrich had some of the lowest national approval ratings in the country. I actually think my map was being generous to Newt.

Clinton 376
Gingrich 162

After accidentally typing "Gingrich" as "Gingrinch," I realized that Newt must have gotten his butt kicked quite frequently.

Clinton 376
Gingrich 162

After accidentally typing "Gingrich" as "Gingrinch," I realized that Newt must have gotten his butt kicked quite frequently.

His name is Newt.  Of course his ass was repeatedly kicked.

But, in 1996, he would have done better than most of you are giving him credit for.  He would have lost in all liklihood, but he did have some moral highground still in '96 and was very powerful.  He likely would have done a bit better than Dole and kept Virginia while possibly (but not definiately) picking up KY, AZ and NV.  With a VP from FL he might even pick up those 25 EVs.  That would probably be the best he could do unless Perot dropped out and Newt made a strong appeal to former Perot voters.

Oh, Newt would have definitely won WV.  ALmost forgot that.

(Ok, so he wouldn't I just wanted to give Al some conniption fits when he read that.)
