If Barack Obama is re-elected, he should thank Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain for turning off female voters and tainting the Republican brand in the process. As a result of this tainting of the Republican brand, Romney has taken a recent hit among female voters and the national race is no longer as competitive as it was two months ago. Excerpts from a recent Bloomberg article:

What's pushing the odds lower for Romney may well be that a huge gender gap has opened up over his candidacy.

In 12 swing states -- Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin -- included in a Gallup/USA Today survey, Obama leads Romney 51% to 42%.

In mid-February, Obama took less than half of the vote from women under 50 years old. Now he wins more than 60% of them. (Obama is ahead of Romney among all women by 18 points.)

That rapid consolidation of women behind Obama, the Washington Post said today, "seems directly attributable to the focus in the Republican presidential primary on contraception and other reproductive-rights issues during the past six weeks or so."

A number of party leaders have thrown up their hands in frustration insisting that the candidates should be spending all their time talking about the economy.

Santorum does better among women than men.

Could it be that Romney just plain sucks as a candidate?

This GOP primary needs to end right away so Romney can focus on more important things, like trying to get Obama out of office.

Newsflash: There are non-GOP female voters.

Guess what: They're going to decide who wins in November.

Guess what part II: Santorum is KILLING the GOP brand among these women just like him and his ilk did in 2006.

Guess what part III: Santorum cannot win the GOP nomination.

The only question that remains, especially if Santorum loses Wisconsin and remains in the race: Why is Santorum so hellbent on helping Obama?

Most people here have already accepted that Mitt Romney is not going to be president next year and the damage has already been done in terms of the female vote (and other things, of course).

Santorum's winning men vs Obama. PPP has him up 49-46 with men, and 41-51 among women.

Romney's margin is identical, he's leading with men by 2 and losing by 10 among women.

The margins are really no different with Romney

Because he's simply the better candidate?

Romney is promoting the same anti-woman policies as all the other Republicans.

But if it weren't for Santorum, these wouldn't be in the mainstream, or at least not as much.

Dude, if Romney's the progressive on women issues, and still polls just as well as Santorum, either:

1, women actually like Santorum more, or 2, Romney isn't considered to be more progressive by actual women.

Take your pick.

...

It's 2.  That's the whole point of this thread.  Santorum has poisoned the well for Romney.

So Santorum's to blame for Mitt's inability to communicate a progressive message?
