Why do gay dudes have sex in public toilets?

Police have arrested 18 men suspected of engaging in sexual activity inside a Manhattan Beach restroom that became a popular meeting spot in recent weeks, officers said Tuesday.

The crackdown possibly put an end to lewd conduct inside the Marine Avenue restroom at the beach, where lifeguards noticed men going inside and staying for extended periods of time.

Among those arrested was the director of security for a major media company.

"It just started up probably the last week in February," Manhattan Beach police Officer Stephanie Martin said. "(Lifeguards) started noticing some questionable conduct."

Men sometimes stayed in the restroom for longer than an hour, and the same people would return. Lifeguards also found graffiti of graphic sexual images on restroom walls, and holes drilled through stall partitions, Martin said.

Lifeguards told police that instead of seeing one pair of feet in a stall, "sometimes they would see two or three."

"MBPD learned the public restroom was being used as a meeting place for sexual activity," Martin said. "Undercover detectives conducted a visual inspection of the restroom and set up surveillance of the location. Within minutes of their arrival, they made their first arrest."

Ok, I get that they may have wives or moms that they don't want knowing that they are secretly homosexual...but why public toilets?  Isn't that kind of gross?  Don't they worry they'll get caught?  Is that part of the "charm"?  Don't they understand that they are ruining public places for everybody else?  There were several parks in Omaha that for years were known as places you don't go because of the toilet sex that have thankfully been cleaned up over the last few years.

...and before anyone starts in, I think heterosexual sex in a public toilet would be just as gross, but that isn't exactly a trend.

I know a couple of friends and one family member that has done that... I honestly don't get it.

a) the risk of thugs who know it's a cruising area... seriously.

b) the sheer hygiene issues... I don't even like my shoes spending too much time in a public bathroom...

I have to say in my lifetime I've stumbled upon more straights having sex in public toilets, particularly in clubs and bars. Not to mention the man and woman who had sex behind my house last summer.

People who get a kick out of it, or simply have no where else to go, will do it - regardless of their sexuality.

Either way it's disgusting for Heterosexuals or Homosexuals to have sex in any public facility. This is exactly why I hate public restrooms...

A little public sex never killed anyone, but a bathroom isn't really the optimal location.

Andrew, surely this is more common for gays though? I would guess that due to the constraints they face the need for casual and secret encounters is a lot higher - hence public toilets.

I think the recipe for gay male promiscuity is pretty simple:  Women are very unlikely to be highly promiscuous; men are much likelier.  So, a very disproportionate amount of highly promiscuous sexual encounters are going to be among gay men.

I also think there are some other issues here -- e.g., gay men are probably a bit more likely to reject societal norms because they feel society has rejected them, or are more likely to try to annonymize their sex life -- but I think it's mostly the dude/dude issue.

Generally it's deeply-closeted men who do this. They can't seek sexual satisfaction through normal means, so they have to resort to furtive, anonymous contacts. I suspect craiglist has become an alternative to many of them.

Except when they do.  specific link  and Google link(note that I had to remove the word "homeless" in the search so I wouldn't get that argument and at least one gay story about a them having public sex on a gay cruise (where public sex is likely very acceptable), but they did it while docked in Dominica, which apparently is a no-no)

But as you, I and others noted, gay dudes have a lot more public sex than straight people, so you'd expect there to be more stories on public gay sex than public straight sex.  Yes, they have more reason to do it, but that doesn't make it any less wrong.

Yeah I have a closeted... person I know (wouldn't call him friend)  who does it in public restrooms. I find it really gross, personally I wouldn't take a dump in one of those things. Not to mention it just furthers and increase anti-gay stereotypes.
