I just watched Colbert skewer him for his simply incorrect claim that the majority of California universities do not offer any courses in US History and realized that this is hardly the first time he's simply flat out pulled something out of his ass, as Stewart and Colbert have constantly reminded us. I know McCain had a bad relationship with the truth in 2008 as well but even Rick has beat him.

While I think Santorum's lies (let's call them what they are) are typically more shocking (10% of the Dutch elderly are put down and they all go around with wristbands saying 'Do Not Euthanize'), Mitt Romney has done nothing but lie and lie throughout this campaign. His lies are more subtle and don't stick out nearly as much but are higher in quantity.

Is he really any worse than Michele Bachmann in this regard?  Maybe only because his campaign has lasted so much longer...

Michele Bachmann may believe the stuff that she says.

I would hypothesize that we're simply seeing the strategy that Rick Santorum used for so many years so successfully. Even in 2006, information didn't flow like it does today. It makes sense that the way he was able to win independents in his state was being able to use fear-mongering and lies on a variety of subjects as he campaigned from town to town. It's obviously his strong suit, but he gets exposed far more often now with the amount of social networking, media coverage and technological wonder.

Excellent call. Michele Bachmann unquestionably had a more tenuous relationship with reality.

His argument (and that of many Catholics) that federally-funded Catholic institutions should be exempt from the federal mandate of providing birth control insurance blatantly goes against the 8-1 SCOTUS decision of Bob Jones University v. United States.

And his "Let's kill the Iranian civillian scientists" is quite ironic considering his "pro-life" stance.

Nah he's truthier than Gingrich or Romney for sure.

Telling the truth hasn't exactly been held in high regard by the Republicans for quite a while.

Mittens has probably said more lies than all of these people combined (Bachmann and other mentally ill persons don't count).

Well, that's it, America. Against abortion? Tough. The Supreme Court ruled on it so don't bother having a contrary opinion.

Still how do you fear about your hero lying and saying that "seven or eight" California universities don't offer any American history courses, when in fact all of them do except one that's a medical school?

Santorum is acting like Gingrich, ie extending the truth or outright lying about your opponent or some about some external threat in order to generate interest in you and your role as a warrior against these threats... except doing it badly.

Romney has also just outright lied, and worse of all, backtracked and said he didn't say what he's on tape saying... All of the GOP have just created their own Obama to fight against... and since people are more than willing to believe the worst about him... they won't use critical reasoning...

I think Bachmann told more blatant lies than Santorum, but out of candidates who are still in the race, it's a close call between Romney and Frothy. Not that any of our candidates are exempt from lying, but geez. This particular election cycle is pretty bad.

Well he's saying it's an unconstitutional attack on the First Amendment.  I'm sorry, but that's just not true.  He (and many Catholics) are acting like this is unprecedented.  It's not.

But to answer the question, no, he hasn't said more false thinks than any other candidate.  The worst was probably Bachmann or Gingrich.  Saying that if we elect him, we'll see gas at least as low as $2.50 was just a stupid thing to say.  We'll never know if that would've ended up being a lie or not.  Part of me wanted Gingrich to win just to see that never happen and see him scramble to excuse it.

If we get a second recession or worse, gas will go below $2.50, so it wasn't a totally absurd target, hut one that isn't particularly desirable because of what it would take to get there.

It's not absurd, but he had no way of guaranteeing it'd actually get there.  And if he got elected and it never got to $2.50... he'd be a 1-term President quicker than George H.W. Bush.
