With the exception of India, it is estimated that about 1% of the global population abstains from meat, poultry, and fish, and that about 0.1% are vegans, avoiding all animal products. Yet these figures translate into about 60 million people worldwide, excluding India.

It is estimated that today, more than 400 million Indians are vegetarian, mostly driven by class and religious concerns, with the Brahmin class expected to not eat meat, the Hindu religion suggesting vegetarianism and the Jain religion demanding it.

In a 2008 study [Vegetarianism in America, published by Vegetarian Times] it shows that 3.2 percent of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million people, follow a vegetarian-based diet. Approximately 0.5 percent, or 1 million, of those are vegans, who consume no animal products at all.

Yes.  And let's include the Indians in that number and make it 7% worldwide. That's a much less lonely number.

I'm not a vegan, but if I were , I'd still be a vegetarian. Grin

No, I tried it for a while, but couldn't stand it.

I eat a lot of vegetarian food, but I can't do without meat, whatever my personal ethical issues with the meat industry.

Yes. I'm almost a vegan - my consumption of dairy and other animal products is very, very low.

No. We evolved into omnivores for a reason.

Look, it's one thing to say you really like animal products so you eat them, but don't try and imply that we somehow need to eat animal products to survive. If you think so, please link me to the relevant research that brought you to that conclusion. And I don't mean to pick on you, since it looks like almost everyone else is saying the same thing. Hmm, maybe I need to reconsider my support for universal healthcare. Tongue

I admit I am weak. I will eat animal products at least a few times a week, if not more. But I think research has shown that an animal-free diet leads to better health. It is better than any pill. So I try and bake vegetables (frying them leads to a loss of nutrition) with some spices and eat it along with Dal (pulses, split peas etc cooked Indian style) and some whole grain roti or brown rice. If you consistently eat that diet, you will lose weight guaranteed and you will be healthier overall.

I'm not vegetarian but strongly dislike the flavors and/or textures of most meats and in practice limit my consumption to 2-4 servings of hamburger per month. I don't have any moral objections about consuming animal products but am very concerned about how those animals are sometimes treated and find it difficult enough to keep track of whose suppliers utilize which methods that I do not really even bother trying. If I knew that a company's practices were satisfactory, or that it sells lab-grown meat I would very likely consume a somewhat greater amount of meat products.

Thankfully, No. I would die without my hamburgers and steak.  I might die with them, but, hey, I would rather die young and happy than old and miserable.  That said, I have lost 30 pounds in the last 5 months.

No, although I don't eat much meat. Still, I think eating meat is morally wrong, but I don't care enough to stop.

No, I cannot bear the thought of living life without meat -though I have no objection to ensuring that the animals we do eat are raised and slaughtered humanely.

I'm always surprised by people's perceived difficulty of living without meat.  I was never a big steak guy, but I definitely enjoy the taste of meat.  What exactly is the difficulty?  Do you all not eat a wide array of food?  You don't have a substantial number of non-meat dishes you enjoy?  That's kind of hard for me to fathom.
