In the next week I have the opportunity to talk with a 92-year old German woman who served in the Nazi Air Force during the 2nd World War as a  flight controller. I think she's born in 1920, so she was about my age during the war (24).

What should I ask her ?

In what circumstances are you going to talk to her?

In what circumstances are you going to talk to her?

As part of a visit to Bayern. She's the mother of a friend of my parents.

Ask her if you can about her degree of ambivalence, and how and when she became aware of Hitler's genocide agenda, and her perception of the attitude of others.

From what I've heard, she has a lot of knowledge about aircraft and so on.

Maybe I ask her if she was already in the airforce during the Air Battle for England in 1940 (she would have been 20 at this time).

Apparently, she's still of good health and has a clear mind, so she's not senile or something.

Ask her if she thought that those German people who weren't imprisoned were giving Hitler their full support, or if there were a lot of people who secretly supported the July 20 plot.

This is actually the first time I can talk with a still living person about their experiences in WW2.

Because my late granddad from my mum's side fought in France as a soldier during WW2, but never wanted to talk ever again about the war, and my grandma was at home during this time and also didn't want to talk about it.

And then there's my granddad from my father's side who was a farmer during the 2nd World War and my father once told me that when the War ended, Nazi-Air Force commander Hermann Göring landed with an aircraft near one of their fields and fled to Zell am See, where he was captured later by US Army members and brought to Nuremburg for his trial.

My grandpa drove a fuel truck, coming ashore on D-DAY in one of the very last waves of the invasion. He never spoke of the war. Alot of people seem to think of WW2 as a "romantic" conflict. But in reality, it was very much like Vietnam---brutal war.

Ask her if the postwar promises of peace have been kept, or kept enough.

Ask her about the bonds she developed with other Air Force members and what the conditions serving were like.
