I'm referring to the politics part.

Franzl do you consider North Dakota the most desirable US state?

No, but I think it's a slightly different issue. North Dakota is far away from any place I find interesting, although in Europe there's almost always something, as crowded as this continent can be. Nothing like North Dakota at any rate. Berlin is left-wing, if that's what you want, but you can still find more responsible non-CDU governments than Berlin (well, actually CDU is part of government there now..).

It was a hard call but I ended up voting Brandenburg.

Now this I find really interesting. What does Brandenburg have that isn't better somewhere else?

A combination of small towns, nature reserves, access to some lakes and forests, a Dfb climate untempered in its seasonal extremes by proximity to the Atlantic, and a left-of-centre (or at the very least not CDU dominated) electorate. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was also an attractive option to me but if I were super-serious about choosing between them I'd need to do a lot of studying.

Well, I live in Berlin and don't plan to move.

The worst of the lot is probably Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Highest unemployment rate + almost nobody lives there + a good chunk of the few people who live there are Nazis.

Schleswig-Holstein is easily my favourite German State. A very nice mix of Danish and German culture. Beautiful country-side and intresting cities. Kiel, Lübeck, and Flensburg seems like awsome places to live. So that's what I voted for.

That being said Baden-Würtenberg also seems fantastic, and I've always found Dresden to seem like a really intresting city to live in. (Even if I don't care that much for the rest of Saxony)

Brandenburg is the place I'd least want to live in.

Never been to Germany outside the Frankfurt airport, alas. I'd probably go with Bavaria (Munich), North Rhine-Westphalia (Düsseldorf), or Schleswig-Holstein (Kiel).

I think my ancestors were from the Northern bit.  After googling pictures of towns, I voted for Hamburg.

Lots of places I would like. Berlin is obviously the coolest choice and the one I voted for without much thinking. Of course, it's more of a cool place to visit than a good place to actually live in. Standard of living and labour market suck for example.

Bavaria is sort of the opposite - nice but not cool. I think NRW, like Düsseldorf might be a decent compromise there.

Bremen had kind of a legendary hardcore scene in the 90s, though not sure what it's like now.

Not relevant to your topic here - but Bremen has (by far) the worst debt problem of all German states. Worse than Berlin.

No idea. Let's say NRW and Hesse because my brother used to live in the former and liked it, and my Mum spent some time in the latter and has nice things to say about it (and, also, the existence of nice cider. Don't knock the little things).

Disagree.

Then again, I do have a job here.

Bayern would be perfect for me: similar to northern Italy pattern,  middle size towns with well distributed economic activities, low unemployment. Some lively social structure, a bit of traditionalism, green fields and mountains.

I didn't say that it was a bad place to live in, just more of a place to visit. Wink

I've had friends live there for a while but it seems more like a city for a bohemian adventure than one where you want to raise a family or something. But it all depends on the specifics of the individual, obviously.

I think Baden-Württemberg probably offers the most, and I have a soft spot for Bavaria....but still: Hessian pride!

Im Herzen von Europa liegt ein Frankfurt am Main...

Oh come on, you can do better than that

I cannot *sing* for the life of me, but I can certainly rhythmically recite it.

Oh, and now for something completely different

Dann bin isch aach nimmer allaa
Dann bin isch aach nimmer allaa
