If this whole thing goes the way I imagine it going, this is completely unfair to have to choose between several contenders for the top spot. Tongue That being said, my vote goes to Vermont.

New Hampshire. Free State Project, NH Liberty Alliance, anti seatbelt/helmet laws, optional auto insurance, anti-REAL ID Act, etc, etc, etc.

I've been to every New England state and still find Vermont to be the nicest.

I lived in Vermont for many years and it's blatantly the best. Western Massachusetts is slightly better than Vermont but Eastern Massachusetts is worse than Vermont (though still, to be sure, very good).

Try January.  People used to milder climes might be in for a bit of a shock.  Not to mention finding gainful employment, dealing with the cost of living, etc.  Everything good about Vermont is also true about New Hampshire, except it's wealthier, lower unemployment, has decent-sized cities within driving distance (if you're in the southern half), has a lower cost of living (due to said decent-sized cities), a warmer climate (but still with plenty of ski areas and stuff), better access to medical attention should one require it, etc.  I suspect Euro city-dwellers would like *living* in the nicer areas of Connecticut the best, however.  New Hampshire is best for those who genuinely like rural lifestyles or are on a limited budget.

I actually like Vermont in part for its harsh climate and almost entirely rural character, but I certainly understand why others might not.

Well, maybe so, but I have been to MA, NH, and ME and didn't really like them at all.
