Do you think the results would have looked close to 68? With wallace possibly picking up a few more rust belt states?

Not sure... it's possible I guess. Wallace did win the Michigan Democratic primary IIRC.
There'd probably be a liberal third party ticket, btw

Nationally, Wallace wou;d've done better, but I don't see him beating Nixon in 72.

My map:

Nixon wins 337-200*. The popular vote is 55-44 percent.

*A Virginia elector votes for Hospers, giving him 1 electoral vote.

Here's what wikipedia says about Wallace's 1972 campaign:

"In early 1972 he once again declared himself a candidate for president, this time as a Democrat. When running in Florida against the liberal George McGovern, 1968 nominee Hubert H. Humphrey, and nine other Democratic opponents, Wallace won by an overwhelming majority, carrying every county in the state.

...Following the shooting, Wallace won primaries in Maryland, Michigan, Tennessee, and North Carolina."

I understand he crushed McGovern in Michigan by something like 51-30.  How is it that he did not win the eventual nomination?

The day that he won his victories in Michigan and Maryland, he was shot by a would-be assassin and was paralyzed from the waist down. This effectively ended his campaign for the nomination.

My map:

Nixon wins 338-200. The popular vote is 55-44 percent.

Actually Nixon wins 337-200-1 because with Virginia still in Nixon's column, Roger McBride would still cast his historic vote for Hospers and Nathan (who I voted for in the poll).

Undecided between Nixon and Hospers, I just know I wouldn't vote for Wallace.  McCarthy probably would have run if Wallace got the nomination.
