I have a question for the hunters here. Do you eat what you shoot, or do you kill for fun?

I respect God's creation and teach my kids to do likewise, and aside from pests (ants, roaches, etc) I kill only what I eat.  My kids know it will be their ass the day they kill for fun.

I bought my son a Walther P22 (.22)  (for terrorizing wildlife)

They have handguns for "hunting" now?

Arizona has had special seasons for hunting javelinas limited to magnum handguns and bow/arrow for decades.

Also, meat in excess of that which can be conveniently stored/consumed by hunters in my area (most venison) is donated to the food bank.

While I was still hunting the meat was always consumed and the hides usually tanned.
It's illegal to say, kill a deer and just leave it in the woods.

That's interesting. I didn't know that.

not only that, you have to harvest all edible meat - you can't just take the backstrap and hind quarters and leave the rest.  In fact, there are some game wardens who will write you a ticket if you don't also harvest the ribs.

All this concern about the meat is funny.  When poors die we let the meat go to waste.

To jmfcst and the other gun-people - which gun is the best for getting away with it?

I'd rather sit there with my hands up and have all my crap stolen in front of me than start shooting like a lunatic. I can replace my crap, not my life. Every other reason to own a gun makes infinitely less sense to me, so no. And I have literally zero interest in them.

Neither do I- I understand shooting for food and also as  population control approved by the state wildlife agency

What did your post have to do with "Gun Owners"?  It was a threadsh**ting and it's sad to see from regularly good posters.  I don't understand the need to come into a thread you KNOW doesn't concern you just to say "And I have literally zero interest in them."  It's stupid, it's trolling, it's a waste of everybody's time and it's bad forum etiquette.

A thread asking people if they own guns is suddenly off limits for people answering no? What I've had to say is no more offensive than some answers in the positive. I simply stated my answer to the original poster and explained my perspective in relation to something else he's said. It probably would have ended with that, but of course...let the drama fly. And that's not threadshetting? Relax, don't get so defensive.

Most people hunt because they enjoy it. If they donate the meat or whatever, I guess that makes it slightly better. But don't deny it's a sport or hobby or whatever you want to call it.

I am not denying it, and regret not having gotten myself away from hunting and fishing until about four years ago. In my case it was an odd break from family tradition but nobody minds.

I'm sure the peccaries appreciate being shot with magnums instead of rifles during those times.

Hunting a Javelina with a centerfire rifle requires little skill, whereas using a magnum handgun does require the hunter to both be far closer to the game, and have greater aiming skill.

So, an average hunter is far less likely to suceed with a magnum handgun than with a centerfire rifle.

That means the Javelina have better survival chances during the special hunting season.

why use a gun that's harder to aim?  I don't get it.

why use a gun that's harder to aim?  I don't get it.

A rifle is required by law to have a barrel length of at least 16 inches and an overall length of at least 24", so it has a longer sight radius, which results in greater ease in aiming.

Mangum centerfire pistols used for hunting typically have barrel lengths of 5 to 9 inches, and hence a shorter sight radius.

This requires one to approach game at a closer distance to obtain a good shot.

Its a matter of skill (not alerting the game).

Doesn't require much skill to pot a Javelina from 100 yards away with a good bolt action centerfire rifle.

The same reason you don't fish with dynamite.
