-I really had to restrain myself in my philosophy class today when my professor compared nazism to socialism. Talk about unfounded assertions. Then he brought up the classic Hayek argument that ultimately even if Hitler oppressed socialists and hated their values, they're still similar because they believe in social planning. The entirety of the right-libertarian thread of thought makes me incredibly angry. If I had to interact with these people on a regular basis, I'd off myself.

Note: I'm not necessarily talking about libertarians but those who subscribe to Ayn Rand/Lew Rockwell's philosophy and see no purpose for any sort of governmental social policy and don't really support the concept of popular sovereignty. They have the tendency towards extreme revisionism to the point where I can't agree with one of their extremist interpretations of passages in famous works like the Wealth of Nations .

-"America isn't ready for a female president." - shut up, idiot!

-"Rich people vote for Republicans, poor people for Democrats." - I'm on your team but you're a moron.

Post yours here.

Social conservatism/authoritarianism/prudish

My biggest pet peeve right now though is the completely retarded notion that someone "should" vote Democratic because they are lower income (or vice-versa, though since it is usually lefties saying this type of junk, it doesn't bother me as much). Anyone who says something like this demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of both politics and economics, and shows little capacity for intellectual thought.

Ugh, too many...that social issues are still even issues, that people vote for one of the two wings of our one-party-state, that people will argue for their party (and its talking points) as if they've worked so hard to earn unfettering devotion and gratitude, that people proclaim their consistency with such ferocity there's no chance of anything else getting through, uuuuuuh I dunno what else.

I have to major pet peeves-

Chickenhawks- those who ducked service in Vietnam especially but act all macho in office. Saxby Chambliss is hte ultimate example as he attacked Max Cleland- a triple amputee Silver Star recipient- as not having the "courage" to lead when he received five deferements... it is a shame on the Republican Party that he now serves on the Armed Services committee.

Second- those who did not serve but act like an expert on military affairs... a great example of this happened during a 2008 Dem debate... see this for a second http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTc_ztwOdcI

In that video- Biden begins by saying that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a Marine Corps General and combat veteran of the Vietnam War, is "flat wrong" on the issue of gay marriage. I happened to agree by the way- I was fine with repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell. However- he went on to say that he knew more then Pace as he had been to Iraq and Afghanistan on taxpayer-funded Senate field trips...many of us who are veterans took the utmost offense at this. Congressmen who visit are takn to the safest areas and pampered and cause a disruption in tasks but even if that wasn't the case- some one who received as many deferments as Joe Biden should NEVER claim that he knows more then a Marine Corps General and the highest ranking member of the Armed Forces. If Pace was in favor of repealing DADT and Biden was opposed I would feel the same way... it is shameful and disgusting and this alone makes me despise Joe Biden, despite having no other issue with him

- "The Callaghan Government was far-left."

- "The Carter Administration was far-left."

- "Democrat Party", "Demorat Party", and so on.

- "Nazism is left-wing."

- "The Australian Liberal Party is libertarian."

- Not really 'political', but when people misspell politicians' names even though the name is in the title of the article or whatever (this seems to happen a lot on Yahoo News).

- "My opinions are (insert nationality), because I'm (insert nationality). Therefore, if anyone disagrees with my (insert nationality) opinions, then they are not truly (insert nationality)."

Anyone who uses the phrase "loony left" to refer to centre-left milquetoast Nu-Labourites. In other words, pretty much the entire British newspaper industry.

This is a problem for you?  Idealism is idealism whether it is comes from the right or from the left.  There are many ways in which fascists and socialists are alike.  Your instructor made a comparison on a very narrow scope, and my guess is that he probably backed the comparison up logically and specifically, in order to make a point, but at that point you were too high on your indignation to pay attention to anything that he was saying.

I guess I have no political pet peeves, but I do admire the fact that all 20-year-olds seem to know everything about everything, even more than people who have dedicated their lives to studying and understanding a subject well enough to try to teach it to others.

- Poorly-informed opposition to the American two-party system.

- Shrill politicians who receive a level of media attention that is totally disproportionate to their actual influence (Michele Bachmann, Allen West, Alan Grayson)

The term "Reagan Democrat" is the first thing that comes to mind. It's easily the dumbest phrase in the American political lexicon.

Screw off. You weren't present in the classroom and you haven't been in any classrooms with this professor. I actually like him and his teaching style, I just disagree with most of his points. This one was particularly odious and slanted.

He's not a historian or poli sci professor and he was trying to make a specific point about the historical trends that created fascism and nazism. He was out of his field here. Yet again: screw off. I don't need your lecture on a situation you know nothing about.

This is one of those great perspective questions. I comment here not on your situation with your professor, or on angus's assertion, but in general, because this is an assertion that libertarians make a lot, isn't it? I can see why a libertarian might ignore the entire weight of historical evidence to posit a relationship. The libertarian sees everything from the lens of the singular variable that libertarian-ism deems important. The orange and the pear may be different fruits, but they are both un-banana-like, and in that sense very similar to one another. They are similar in their un-banana-ism. After all, the stars in the constellations look close to each other.

Oh and I complain about it all the time it doesn't even need to be mentioned here, but stupid speculation about VP candidates, especially when based around the idea that some type of neighboring state advantage exists and that the primary reason for the selection of a VP candidate is if they can lock up their home state, which becomes quite inane when you consider how many recent VP candidates were even from swing states.

LOL!  I do sound like a crusty old fart, don't I?  But I have an excuse.  I recently turned 45, so I'm allowed to be a little crusty.  What's your excuse for taking yourself so seriously?  Man, if you're already so uptight at your tender age, I'm frightened to imagine what a stonebreaker you'll be at my age.

comparing the two as you began to smells very strongly of the right-libertarian's favorite inane activity, arguing that fascism was left-wing.  it rightfully will draw a visceral reaction out of those with a leftish sympathy.

Personal Pet Peeve #123: People who use terms like "Cisgender" and a lot of things related to the more radical "queer" elements of LGBT, emphasis on the T part. I've noticed this one popping up a lot, along with other bizarre and unnecessary sexual labels like "demisexual," etc. I already had problems with the whole LGBT label and gay rights movement but this stuff is just well, it surpasses self parody. I almost wonder if they're just trolling us. Case in point:

As someone who's transgendered, the use of "cisgender" even manages to annoy me. It smacks of being a euphemism.
