The map with the different shades is the 08 Trend map. The other map is from DRA. If you click on population, what I did was to highlight all the precincts that were the darkest red. It seems as if the diagonal Beaumont to childress map occurs here too. This is probably why it's difficult for democrats to win the state, is because you have dueling trends.

I can see Texas in the future being like Florida in the future by the looks of things. You have South TX, the major cities, and West Texas being the Democratic areas, and East TX, Panhandle, and Central parts of Texas being the GOP areas. With the San Antonio-Corpus Christi areas being the swing area.

Much how like N. FL is GOP, S. FL is DEM, and Central FL being swing.

Am I correct?
