What if...
Ignoring the butterflies from 1976, when Helms' endorsement helped Reagan keep competitive with ford, and thus make him frontrunner going into 1980, (maybe helms endorses him anyway), lets say Jesse Boy remains a Democrat, with all positions, etc. remaining unchanged, and Geraldine Ferraro releases her finances immediately in 1984 (if she's still Mondale's running mate).  Bush still picks Quayle, and wins the nomination handily.  He can't attack Helms from the left, Helms easily being the more conservative.  If he attacks Helms from the left he would risk sacrilege against all the Reagan Revolution stood for.  Methinks its close.  Helms could also pick Bentsen, but I wouldnt see Lloyd being useful in the campaign, though he'd be a great pick for SecDef.

Gerrie Ferraro was a good woman with sound personal convictions and would not appear on a ticket with a known bigoted chauvinistic pig such as Jesse Helms... nor would Helms ever pick a woman..Sorry this scenario is not plausible even in the outside realm of the space time continuum.

What about a divided convention?  Gerrie was a no-name outside her district until she ran for VP, as was Sarah Palin.
