I don't think we do. Even though this goes way beyond DOMA into Virginia territory for making legal relationships unworkable, people consistently vote as if it's only about marriage, unless it affects opposite-sex couples.

It is their own fault for trying to overeach by banning civil unions too and playing amateur hour on the construction.

Because it doesn't matter if it's marriage or whatever it's called, if it (beneficially) affects same-sex couples, a segment of the population will always vote it down.

Just once I'd love to see one of these amendments backfire on the people that vote for it. It'd never happen, but it would be sweet irony.

I should have come on here to field opinions from the NC posters about the 3 Republicans running fro LG, as well as Secretary of State and Insurance Commissioner. Those three were really hard to make a choice based on the their websites and what little I could find.

Yeah, that will be an interesting race. I've some of Dan Forest's ads on Youtube and he looks like he's trying to appeal to the tea party Republicans.

I'm pretty excited about Linda Coleman on my side.

If McCrory becomes Governor, having Coleman as Lt. Governor would be a nice consolation prize for me!

The poll out today was very consistent with their last poll.

This pretty much sums it up:

"Lack of voter understanding about how far reaching the amendment is continues to be the biggest obstacle for those hoping to defeat it. 55% of voters in the state support some form of legal recognition for gay couples in the form of either marriage or civil unions to only 41% completely opposed. But at the same time 55% of voters plan to support the amendment that would prohibit any legal recognition for same sex couples while only 41% are opposed."

This is why it will eventually be repealed if it passes:

"There continues to be a massive generational gap with seniors (60/36) strongly in support of the amendment and young voters (33/59) strongly opposed."

Basically, because they don't understand what the amendment does.

Just heard about this amendment today. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not really only about gay marriage. I saw the commercial running against the amendment and it basically said that if the amendment is passed, not only will it restrict rights for gay couples but also opposite sex couples in a domestic relationship- that's why the DA in the commercial was talking about a domestic abuse case between an unmarried man and woman.

If the opponents can educate people about the facts of the case and convince them that it's more than just a referendum on gay marriage, then they have a shot. But it looks like it'll be an uphill battle.

I think the media in this country exists to make sure the voters are not informed.

Too bad that Jerry Brown wasn't attorney general  there to name it "Eliminates Rights of couples to have domestic partnerships Constitutional Amendment".
