Senator Clarence on Iran-
"If I am elected President- I will say loud and clear to the Iranian leadership that any attempt- whether successful or not- to use a nuclear weapon on another nation will result in the destruction of the Iranian regime. The Iranian test of a nuclear weapon has proven diplomacy to be a failure...the world looked the other way and willingly bought Iran's lies that their nuclear program was for peaceful intentions. In addition- if Iran were to threaten us or an ally with a nuclear attack- I will order swift military action to render them incapable to follow thru on that threat. Diplomacy has failed- the Iranians have gone nuclear...now we must be firm and make it clear further transgressions will not be tolerated by Atlasia."

I fundamentally agree with most, if not all, of this, but feel that making such statements at this point in the diplomatic process could increase tensions in the region. Iran already knows we would respond with force if they attacked us or an ally; however, making such belligerent proclamations only serves to drive them away from the negotiating table.

Right SJoyceFla- we have a respectful disagreement on the last point- I believe diplomacy failed to stop them from acquiring nukes and would fail to stop them from using them...
What has incrased tensions in the region is not any statement we could make, but the Iranian's test of a nuclear weapon!

Folks- tomorrow is Memorial Day and Tuesday I leave with my beautiful lady friend (perhaps soon fiancee....) for nearly three weeks in Europe. I will have internet access- I'll use it to Skype with my family while away...I'll therefore be on the web maybe once a day but I hope you understand that I will be focused on the trip and hooking up with family
This campaign will continue- I will participate in any debates we have and will aim to respond to any questions. Frankly- you all know me, you know my views, you know my opponents, you know theirs! I don't believe my vacation will be a hindrance to this campaign and if in the event it is- I have an outsanding running mate and a helluva campaign chairman to hold down the fort!

Yelnoc and I are proud to endorse Oakvale for 2nd preference- this was made after 20RP12 left the race but I wanted to make this clear now... he has shown he has the temperament and willingess and ability to work with others across the aisle and be an effective leader...though we disagree on much and it will become clear- I will be happy to place him second on my ballot and urge my supporters to do the same

Thank you very much for those kind words, Clarence. I'm honoured to have your support for second. Smiley While, like you said, we doubtless disagree on many things, I think it's great that we can have an adult conversation about the future of the country. I look forward to the debates. Hope your Europe trip is going well! Smiley

Senator Clarence addresses Whig Convention

Quote
Chairman ZuWo, Vice Chairman SimFan, Members of the Whig Party, and Fellow Atlasians-

I am honored by your endorsement vote and I accept your nomination for President!

A great man once went on national television and asked “Who am I- why am I here?”... I sometimes ask myself the second question. The next First Lady of Atlasia (maybe the only First Lady of Atlasia!) asks me the question right now as I sit here typing this up... why the hell am I on this board with a bunch of teenagers and college kids and liberals? The answer is- because you all who I've “met” are very smart people and good people and I enjoy the conversations and discussions we have...I learn from all of you every day and I am grateful to be a part of this web community

My opponents are all good and smart people- all three of them. I'd also like to say that I respect two people who have left the race- Ben is a friend on the board and I am very glad to work with him in the Senate now... 20RP12 is a great fella who gets too much crap from you all and I am honored to have his support- though wish he would come on back to the Whigs! I also want to compliment the man I hope is my predecessor... Polnut is not the one I voted for in the last election (that would be my good friend ZuWo) but he has held the office with dignity and grace... he has done his best to find common ground and I've been glad to find it with him. But these folks- Napoleon, Oakvale, and Tweed- smart and have bright futures ahead of them.

However- let's put that aside for now... because I'm writing this sh**t to get your vote, not to get you to vote for them. I'm “an old” in life but not here on this board- but I'd like to think I've made my mark on the Fantasy Elections...I was an Imperial South Legislator and I am now a Senator. In these positions I've stood up for my views but worked to find common ground. In this record is where you find what distinguishes me from my opponents- I am not one who will reject an idea flat without any discussion- the purpose of this game is discussion!!! I'm also not some one who will say things just to be Mr. Popular

The purpose of this game is discussion- I repeat that again because I believe it. We're not here to throw catch phrases at each other like “Whig War on Women” or call folk “crazies” or reject ideas without any discussion- that's for the politicians in Washington to do and that's why all of us on this board- no matter what color the icon under our user name is- criticize them...enough with the one-liners and rigidity. I promise as your President I will lead discussions about every issue- no matter how much I disagree with the measure. Hell- I found Polnut's proposal for the national broadcaster to be  terrible but you know what- I sponsored it because (and I said this at the time) I wanted to discuss the issue... I argued against it and voted against it...but I think we all gained from the discussion. Let's take a step back and realize folks- this is an internet board and it's not as if a bill that passes the Senate here has an ounce of impact on an actual life, so let's take a step back and debate it...That's the President I will be

On the other extreme is the mentality that you should try to please every one and be Mr. Popular... you all know that isn't me either. I never yield for my beliefs- and I do not believe compromising is yielding. I will debate something I believe till I die and if it fails- then so be it, but I'll try my best... this would be boring however if the people I was debating were all conservatives! Right now we have a good guy as the President- he is called center-left by you folks... and you are complaining about lack of activity and interest....the cure to that is not more of the same- not another center-left nice guy President. Oakvale is a good fella and I am proud to endorse him for my 2nd prefernece- but what will fix the lull here is having a conservative President who is willing to discuss and debate issues... If you don't believe I'd make a fine President- I respect that. But if you tell me you dont want to vote for me because I am a conservative when Tmthfor94 is praised for a cross party endorsement.... and I'll tell you not much will change if you liberals vote only for yourselves... a right vs left debate will be more interesting then a left vs center-left debate...and the latter is all you folks will have if you don't vote for any conservatives. I'll veto left-wing bills the Senate passes and we'll talk it out some more...not gridlock but discussion- a balance of power that will put new energy in this game

Most of you know where I stand on the issues... I started a Presidential Debate post so we can talk them out...I hope to have  these discussions with my opponents but as always- ask me in my campaign thread if you have any questions about my views...

My friends- the boring is the predictable and the predictable is the boring... what's predictable is that the conservatives vote for me and liberals are split between the other three- and the other three combine to beat me in the last ballot...let's just be frank about it. That happens again and again it seems- even though I've only been around for one election I'm pretty good with getting the lay of the land in new places.... if you want the predictable you sure as hell don't want me. If you want someone old and new at the same time- Vote for Clarence.

I want to say a few words about my running mate- I am honored to have a young man as smart and astute as Yelnoc as my running mate... Yelnoc is a moderate and for those of you who are critical- that does NOT mean some one without beliefs...if means some one with moderate beliefs. But he has been Speaker of the Imperial Legislature since I started around here and he has experience presiding over a legislative body- he will make a fantastic Vice President if you give us the honor

Fellow Atlasians- I ask that you put your views aside and look at us candidates as people... consider our behavior in this game and on the board and our experiences as people... if you vote because you want to follow the party line of a fake internet party- what's the point of posting on the Fantasy board? Do you want some one who is arrogant and rude? Do you want some one who is a crowd pleaser and very similar to the status quo? Or do you want some one with views different from what is the norm around here but who puts those views on the table to talk and has had discussions with so many of you that have left us with mutual respect for each other... that is the type of man I aim to be on this board and in my life and that is the type of President I will aim to be if I get the honor...

Thank you and God Bless

I'd like to respond to a few ideas Napoleon laid out. I respect and appreciate the fact that he puts forward these ideas, and I look forward to discussing them- but I believe it is my obligation as his opponent to point out why I found some paticularly disagreeable...

Quote
I will seek the creation of a national university system, with campuses in all five regions. This system will give us the capacity to educate more of our young people and expand their opportunities for future careers, with the additional benefit of construction ans education job creation.

I will seek to prohibit using tips or commissions from counting toward an employee's minimum compensation.

I will reconsider our use of drone technology and the moral hazards associated with it.

National university- I find no justification for this massive waste of taxpayer dollars. For starters- we already have some national universities- our military academies and military graduate schools such as the Naval and Army War Colleges. These are provided to accepted students free of charge and have a well-paying guaranteed career as the result. In addition- I see no evidence that students' needs are not being met by the current university systems in the regions and private schools- and I certainly don't see a way those needs couldn't be alleviated thru those systems... I'd be keen to hear Governor Napoleon's reasoning here

Tips/commissions- I just did a basic research on this issue thru the Google search- and found that law currently states that when tips or commissions do not bring that worker's wage to minimum wage, their superior is required to bring that up. The problem is- they occasioanlly don't do that. I'd be keen explore ways to ensure that happens with you, but don't believe legally raising the minimum wage for these workers would have any positive impact for thier employment, or prices at food service establishments

Drone warfare- I'm not sure if you are referencing the drones themselves or the ability to target our own citizens. The second is a legitimate point I believe- but as an ardent supporter of drone warfare, I don't believ ethe first is. Drones are a method of pursuing our enemies without placing any of our lives at risk. AS I said in the Presidential Debate to a question from angus- I would rather see a young Second Lieutenant in the Air Force pilot an aircraft from a Las Vegas control room then from the cockpit over Damascus (this was in regards to a potential Syria conflict).  Drone warfare is the solution to nationbuilding conflicts which result in our troops being killed while performing police functions...it saves the lives of the men and women in our armed services and I strongly support it and do not see any moral hazard beyond the possibility to target our own citizens...which is a legitimate criticism and one we need to set very clear standards for

Clarence, I share Napoleon's concern about drone wafare, but you don't directly address the reason for my concern in your statement. Namely, I'm concerned that war will become too politically palatable for us when going to war doesn't involve placing Atlasian lives at risk. I don't trust politicians to take armed conflict as seriously when we're not risking our own blood, nor do I trust the public to hold them accountable for their actions and whatever destruction and loss of life results from them. I'd be interested in hearing your take on this.

This is a concern I share also... during an aerial strike, civilian lives hang in the balance and to think of it being treated like a video game is very concerning. To answer your question- I believe we need to distinguish between the War on Terror and historical wars. The difference between the War on Terror and- for example- WWII is the diference between low intensity conflict and high intensity conflict. What's the difference you may ask....

Low intensity conflict essentially covers everything our special operators do- the SEALs, the "Green Berets", Delta Force, air commandos, if you include the Rangers them also, etc... You probably ask- "How could you consider a Navy SEAL operation low-intensity?" It involves the definition of that type of warfare. Low intensity conflict involves a very limited target and exceptional restraint to prevent a broader battle. When the Somali pirates took a ship's captain hostage a short while back, we didn't send a fleet...we sent a destroyer and a frigate, with a SEAL team on board. The reason is simple- the pirates would've executed the captain had we used overwhelming force, so it was crucial to use very limited, targeted force. Three shots were fired in that conflict- all three were fatal and were fired after the three pirates showed signs of aggression

I believe the use of drone warfare ought to be limited to two situations- low intensity conflict and the disability of air defense. Disabling an enemy's anti-aircraft artillery is crucial to save our pilots' lives at the start of conflict. Outside of these two circumstances- I'd be hesitant to allow for drone warfare. I'd even be open to legislation specifying the circumstances it can be used. However- I would much prefer the use of drone warfare to nationbuilding and I believe you would also... consider Afghanistan. Our targets there are limited- al Qaeda and the Taliban remnants who support them. Why do we need thousands upon thousands of troops on the ground- performing the duties of a policeman and inviting aggression and hostility from the Afghans??? If we pursued drone warfare instead, the Afghan people would likely never see a single one of our troops, but we could effectively and precisely eliminate those who are planning terror attacks and disable the network which gives them shelter

To summarize- I believe the use of drone warfare would not only save the lives of our men and women- but it would keep the intensity of all combat down and prevent broader wars- with far more lives lost to our troops and their civilians- from being necessary
