When you're assigning colors to political parties in text (for legibility etc.), what color scheme do you assign based on ideology?  I personally follow the one below - it's generally fairly straightforward to figure out.

Old Left
New Left
Green/Environmentalist
Social Democratic/Center-Left
Liberal/Libertarian
Independent/"Centrist"/Agrarian
Cult movements (LaRouche/Fulani/Maharishi Mahesh etc.)
Conservative/Christian Democratic/Center-Right
Hard Right (Non-Fascist)
Fascist/Nazi/White [or insert ethnic group as needed] Nationalist

For me, using the colors on hand, it goes something like this:

Libertarianism, Classical Liberalism, Communitarianism
Corporatism, Authoritarianism, Fascism, Totalitarianism
Social Liberalism, Social Democratism, Christian Democratism
Democratic Socialism, Communism, Anarcho-Syndicalism
Centrism, Neo-Mercantilism, Third Way, Liberal Democratism
Neo-Liberalism, Capitalism, Voluntaryism, Anarcho-Capitalism
Environmentalism, Agrarianism, Eco-Capitalism, Eco-Socialism
Personism, Ecologism, Ecocentrism, Biocentrism, Primitivism
Conservationism, Cornucopianism, Techno or Anthropocentrism
Cultural Pluralism, Multiculturalism, Consociationalism, Feminism
Ethnocentrism, Nationalism, Conservatism, Nativism, Imperialism
Humanism, Humanitarianism, Internationalism, Cosmopolitanism
Realpolitik, Neo-Realism, Militarism, Expansionism, Colonialism

Whichever ideology is most central to the party's identity is used.

Libertarianism, Classical Liberalism, Communitarianism

Are you implying that Libertarianism and Communitarianism are similar?

The Conservatives here are usually referred to as the "Blacks", therefore Black for ÖVP, CDU etc.

Blue: the north-eastern candidate
Red: Rust belt, southern
Yellow: Westerner, Libertarian
Green: more progressive candidate. Can also be "centrist"

Yellow text on a white background is awful, but there are alternatives that work on this forum if you take the time to use them.

I am not going to reserve one color simply for variations of right-libertarianism and European liberals. I consider communitarianism the least illiberal and statist pick out of the varied collectivist options. One could try to argue neo-corporatism and some forms of syndicalism are more individualist than communitarianism, but in the end my decisions about where to draw the line between the yellow and brown ideas are always going to be subjective.

That's actually pretty interesting - I'd never tinkered with those features before but they seem to help a lot.

To raise aesthetic quality my color schemes for election maps vary on a situational basis. xD

Meh, I don't really do ideological color schemes as well.  I usually go by political party:

America:
Federalist
Democratic Republican
National Republican
Democratic
Whig or American
Anti-Masonic, State's Rights, American Independent, usually used for Southern or right wing third parties.
Liberty and Free Soil
Republican
Liberal Republican, Union parties
Populist, Progressive, Green, and various Left Wing Parties
Prohibition and other morons
National Democratic, Libertarian, various other "liberal" parties
Social Democratic, other various far left parties

I think that's it.

Now Primaries:

Democratic:

Establishment
Moderate
Left Wing
Populist
Anti-Establishment

A few other colors might be used to designate other candidates

Republican:

Mainstream
Moderate
Liberal
Right Wing
Libertarian

Note, the primaries mostly refer to my TLs, not RL.

Those who read my blog know that I don't have a standard colour scheme because I try to colour candidates/parties on the basis of what serves as their colour in their country. So I use black rather than blue for the Austrian and German right, green for PASOK, pink for the PS (but red for the PSOE or the Walloon PS) or orange for the NDP. In general though, my base colours would have to be:

Trots/far-left
Communists/democratic socialists/Eurocommunism/Radical left
Social democracy/modern socialism/left
Green parties/ecologists/environmentalists
Latin Radicalism/social liberalism
Classical liberals/libertarians
Regionalism/separatism (varies)
Agrarianism/Scandinavian Centre-liberalism
Centre-right
Certain Christian democrats (UDF/MRP variety)
Conservatives/liberal-conservatives/right
National conservatives/Social conservatives/Reactionaries
Far-right/right-populism/fascism
Anarchism/anarcho-capitalism

Social liberals
Liberal
Independent
Joke/eccentric parties
Agrarian
Christian Democrats
Conservatives/centre-right
National Liberals
Libertarian
Nationalists/Fascists

On my blog, I need to use colours for non partisan municipal races.

I usually use the following:

Conservative, right wing, right of centre
Liberal, centrist
Left wing, social democratic, progressive, left of centre

Making the third one orange would be too partisan I think. In the future I think I will try to use the colours of the local campaign. For example I have Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi as green on my map, but his campaign colour was purple.

I basically go by these standards with little variation.
