His foreign aid policy was the opposite of Mexico City. Take from that what you will. My best guess is soft pro-life.

Was abortion even an issue that was discussed beyond state level at the time?

In foreign-aid terms yes, otherwise no. There were certainly pro-choicers, but the climate meant they had to be deeply closeted.

Given his appalling personal behavior, think we can be sure that he was enthusiastically in favour of it in practice.

I agree. It's amazing how many people over here are Verehrer of his though. Try telling my grandmother (86 years old, from the Niederrhein) that he wasn't, in fact, killed to keep him from radically improving every American life.

When the Emperor visited the distant province by the limes in '62, my mother was given the day off school so that she could go and watch him speak.

But this is my mother we're talking about. She went home and helped her mom take care of the young'uns.

Whatever his opinion was once upon a time, I'm sure he would have had a chance to change his mind since then, like every other politician of a certain age.

I can see JFK eventually becoming pro-choice, much like Ted did after Roe.

RFK, on the other hand, would probably be strongly pro-life. After all, he was a fanatic Catholic, impregnating his wife every freaking year.

RFK: Not quite Santorum though. In 1967 he strongly hinted that he would support exceptions for rape and incest.

JFK: Agreed.

How many of the sitting Supreme court justices were actually personally pro-choice when they ruled Roe vs. Wade. Less than the actual number that agreed with the opinion right?

There are conservative Republicans, that supports said exception. Rick "oops" Perry, for example.
