Former President Jimmy Carter told MSNBC that President Obama would likely win re-election this fall, but said that he would be "comfortable" with Mitt Romney as president.

Said Carter: "I'd rather have a Democrat but I would be comfortable -- I think Romney has shown in the past, in his previous years as a moderate or progressive... that he was fairly competent as a governor and also running the Olympics as you know. He's a good solid family man and so forth, he's gone to the extreme right wing positions on some very important issues in order to get the nomination. What he'll do in the general election, what he'll do as president I think is different."

I agree with the Old Jimmy. Romney would probably govern not much differently than Obama and I could live with that, rather than with someone like Gingrich or Santorum ... Tongue

No. Romney would be a disaster. Because he has no morals and can be twisted to do anything if it's politically helpful for him, he would be a disastrous president.

Romney would be disaster except for rich and Social conservatives. The days of Romney as
moderate are over.I expect him to highlight his business exceperence and not his time as
Governor.

Because he is purely a career politician, he would be a disastrous president.

Sounds about right.

Probably because he's weak, inefficient and ineffective, but has a big heart (i.e., the personification of liberalism).

Carter as a neoliberal? I'd be interested in reading an elaboration (not disagreeing with you necessarily, just curious).

I really can't think of a policy that Carter enacted that is neoliberal. I even opened wikipedia to help me.

I'd be comfortable with Romney in that I don't think he'd go crazy and nuke somewhere like Gingrich or Santorum would. That's not to say he wouldn't be a disastrous President, though.

If Obama really wants to screw with Republicans' heads, he'll get Carter, Mondale and Dukakis to endorse Romney and air a bunch of ads that say things like...

"Mitt Romney's innovative healthcare plan inspired President Obama to enact a similar program nationwide."

"Former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis says, 'As a fellow Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate, I feel like Mitt Romney is someone I can identify with and relate to."

"Former Vice President Walter Mondale says, 'Mitt Romney said himself that he was an independent during the Reagan/Bush years, which means there's a good chance he voted for me in 1984. In 2012, I'm returning the favor and endorsing Mitt Romney for president.'"

"Mitt Romney bravely stood for progressive ideals and enacted stricter requirements to purchase firearms as governor. Mitt Romney - competent, progressive leadership for America."
