I know Chicago is excellent in terms of studying economics and political philosophy: very influential and academically rigorous. It could be an exciting challenge to go there. 
I'm not so familiar with Columbia in these areas.

Yes, I am biased, but I would try to get some handle of the current culture of both campuses, and if you have a strong preference for living in one city or the other, that might be determinative. And then there is the cost issue. In many ways, the two schools have much in common being in big cities, at the edge of a rough area, but not in one, and so forth. What I admire about the U of C however, if it is still true, is that it does a very good job eschewing PC and fads. It sticks to the basics of giving you a really splendid education. However, at least when I was there, that first year was the toughest endeavor I ever engaged in. After that, everything since has seemed rather easy. You might inquire how much reading per week is expected in your classes. It was just too much for my first year. You were expected to read like 3 whole books a week often with complex text, one for each of 3 classes, and so forth. One could never get it all done.

One thing I do know: if you graduate for the U of C, you will be an educated man across a range of disciplines in a way that just does not obtain most places. It is impossible to just skate by.  A fair amount of my erudition, such as it is, is due to my experiences there.

Oh, and I had no problem being considerably more conservative than I am now, in a liberal sea. I was in general treated with respect - and fairly - always fairly.  I never felt I was being screwed for my opinions, which I was not shy about giving - and backing up.

Thank you Torie, what you have said provides an insightful view of what the U of C offers. It is in line with what I've already heard, but it's a great deal more honest. I've been told by both its fans and detractors that it is perhaps the most academically rigorous of the top schools in the country, and to be honest combined with the image of being a dull school- one my visit did not particularly shake (except for the gamerish types)- I am somewhat concerned about the quality-of-life I would enjoy.

That is my main concern, and to an extent I see Columbia offering an extremely similar programme without that primary downside- I went there and had a bang... to say the least.

However I think I could do my best to make the most of it. As for books, I am a notoriously fast reader. Thank you, again!

Modern technology allows you to read books faster(hint: internet). But U of C has graduation rate closer to a state school than an elite University.

Oh you passed the "do I know them" test. I have also reinstated the "one for one policy", perhaps wiser now that I have established myself on the site.

If I was in your shoes, I'd go with UChicago: everything about the school seems to fit your personality and outlook on life perfectly; at least what little I know about you based on the Atlas.

The University of Chicago is a great school and I know a decent number of people who went there. It is probably a more challenging school that Columbia once you get there; U of Chicago is not known for being easy, but the challenge should help you to grow academically. Hyde Park is an interesting neighborhood and a special place in its own right. If the cost isn't holding you back, and actually encouraging you, I would recommend the University of Chicago. It's a great place. Of course, that's no knock on Columbia either; I'm sure it's a great school

Go with UChicago.  It's cheaper!  Not to mention Chicago is going to be cheaper than NYC.  Plus, we Midwesterners are much friendlier than those East Coast people
